  • It’s gotten far, far worse. There’s always been an online lingo like this from way back in chat groups or apps like AIM or IRC, but texting shorthand when we had phone keypads and limited texting was way more legible. We shortened the word count more than the letter count and autocomplete wasn’t a thing. Now the shorthand is completely unnecessary and has become more of a stylistic choice than a necessity. I don’t mind it, but when coupled with generational slang it can become indecipherable.

  • No. Never smoked. Alcohol tried pretty hard to get me, so I quit. Wasn’t fun anymore. Never really gambled other than pocket change, whatever I had on me was used and when it was gone it was gone. Rarely more than $5.

  • Think of how many ads you see and hear. From pharmaceuticals to entertainment industry ads the amount of money poured into sales and marketing is absurd. If there’s any one massively under-accounted for scourge on modern society and finance it’s ad agencies consuming huge amounts of budget, bandwidth, and just being constantly in your face. Pharma alone spends ~$20Bn on ads.

  • There is no good solution. Daily life is littered with bluetooth, gps, and other devices, from watches to appliances to car stereos, many of which are not clearly named at all. You can Use a bluetooth scanner app like LightBlue to see what devices are around you as many of the trackers use bluetooth connections as well. Check for unfamiliar devices with strong signals if you park your car someplace away from others in a parking lot or something.

  • The carve outs are somewhat reasonable, airport/theme parks restaurants for instance are already ridiculously overpriced partly because of the absurd concession fees they pay to exist there, adding a huge wage increase would really be difficult to manage. Restaurants like coffee shops in grocery stores or theme parks are usually store/park employees already, no? I don’t know the deep details but these carve outs seem somewhat reasoned thanks to different wages possibly already being paid…I’m sure there is room for someone to get screwed though. There always is.
