  • I'm going to sound like a shill (go through my post history if you think so) but this knife sharpening thing: https://www.horl.com/en-US

Friend of mine in NYC introduced me to it, and I was super skeptical it wouldn't just strip five time more metal than a whetstone. I emailed the guy who made my chef's knife, and he said "No, that thing is the bomb."

My knives are always sharp and if they are not, they get sharp in 2 minutes. And one of the disks doubles as a honer. (and yes I know I should have been honing them more before I got this, but could never get into the habit of always using the steel and being afraid my angle was off).

  • What I hate the most is, unless I have seen the meme in the before times, I always, always wonder if it's Gen-AI crap.

Give me back my funny animal memes and videos!

  • 1984 and it's spiritual prequel, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas .

These books opened up my teen mind to the fact that we are always, individually and as a society, creating, editing, and manipulating consensual reality.

Unfortunately the bad guys are way ahead of us on the manipulation bit, and with LLMs/Gen-AI I fear a total collapse of consensual reality. But if we have enough Hunter S's in the world, we may still be in the fight.

  • Not OP but yes an actual scientist would like it. It's more about the ways in which cultures over time turn to the supernatural to explain something that has a scientific explanation.

It like a lot of Big Science books (Guns, Germs, and Steel, Sapiens), has more than a few "just so" stories, but i you look past that, it's a very valuable book teaching you to look at things you don't understand critically and why we as a society, often fail at this.

  • Getting Uni flashbacks....

  • Thanks, I should have paid closer attention. In my defense, I'd only had one coffee.

  • This ...is not the NATO alphabet and I also don't get the joke, aside from the Archer references.

    What gives?

  • My hand made for me chef's knife.

  • Kaiju

  • I believe this deep in my soul.

  • That fight is in the appendices, but not the Hobbit itself.

  • Merkur and Feather blades, exactly what I have been using for 25 years.

  • Hang in there. I know the feeling all too well.

  • For fart, the word in Dutch is close to our word for precious. The others I haven't really heard, but it's not the kind of thing you'd say in public anyway.

  • Coming to give an updoot on this comment, I noticed you fabricate yours the opposite way I do: you slice four strips from stem to top while I cut them around the circumference.

    This helps you think?

  • Thanks!

  • I've been experimenting with this as well, but cannot get the temp dialed in - what temp did you use?

  • This should be higher up - Eur-lex is the official repository of such documentation in the EU.
