  • I once cut the inside of my thigh as a kid by bicycle jousting with my friends at night-time along the streets and sidewalks. Slammed into one of my friends' tires head-on, and got thrown forward into the crossbar. I was lucky I was slightly off-center, but I came away with a nasty bruise, a laceration, and a rip in my shorts.

  • Allied leadership was very wary of running into the issue they did in WW1 - where the exaggeration of German war crimes discredited the propaganda apparatus of Britain. As they became more aware of the nature and extent of the death camps, Allied leadership opted to document evidence for the postwar tribunals rather than engage in a war of accusation and denial against Nazi Germany which could have seriously damaged the short-term credibility of their propaganda efforts.

    Whether this was the right choice is another question entirely.

For to the godfearing, death has no terror. It is a joyful sleep to be followed by a waking that would be all the more refreshing for the long sleep.

    Religious fanatics rarely deserve the adulation their beliefs receive.

  • Yes. Birth rates in developed countries naturally drop without government intervention.

    That being said, socialism is more than just basic needs being met - it's a question of who owns what laborers produce. Under socialism, the idea is that the workers themselves own what they produce (or the fruits of their labor, more generally), as opposed to shareholders or firm owners.

  • Explanation: Diogenes was an Ancient Greek philosopher who lived in an empty wine barrel on the streets and passed along unconventional wisdom to passers-by, often unasked for. Such brilliance as "If only it were as easy to banish hunger by rubbing my belly!" when accosted for masturbating in public, and "Behold, a man!" whilst holding a plucked chicken, when Plato's Academy defined a man as a featherless biped.

    Unironically, though, his iconoclasm, while eccentric, does show a well-considered and coherent value system, and for that reason, despite everything, was a major influence on later philosophers, especially the Cynic school. Alexander the Great famously said, "If I were not Alexander, I would want to be Diogenes." to which according to some accounts Diogenes replied, "If I were not Diogenes, I too would want to be Diogenes."
