  • It took a day before I got my activation email. There was no indication on the website it was gonna take that long, but I'm guessing it's early enough that it might still require manual approval.

    That said it's still very much a ghost town

  • I'd like to argue that using AP is an inconsistent rule for membership. For example, Diaspora has been considered to be part of the fediverse from early on, but it doesn't use AP.

    I don't really know where to draw the line. AP simply isn't suitable for some applications, but it makes sense to include it for branding

  • It's not just Lemmy. I was thinking more like Mastodon. Tbh I haven't tried frendica, but I haven't heard of anyone actually using it.

    At least pixelfed defaults you to the main instance so you don't have to think about it if you don't want to. Although the official android app hasn't worked for me in ages.

  • No, it's continued relative unpopularity in the face of universal hated-but-contined-use of the mainstream networks continues to be depressing.

    Although the onboarding process for most of the major fediverse platforms is a bit scary for normies.

  • Maybe "options" was a bad choice of word.

    These are things we're talking about and just because we're talking about a thing doesn't mean we are bound to choose it if given them as a choice.

    I can say that I hate one thing more than another thing without ever being forced to choose either of them.Just like in my example I'm not forced to run over a child's foot just because I spoke about it.

    And besides sometimes you ARE forced to choose between a list of bad options. Especially in politics. There is certainly a "least bad" option, and treating everything bad as equal is, like I said before, how monsters get power.

    I refuse to believe that these are the responses of someone having a good faith discussion. You're clearly trolling, but idky because you're not being funny or clever. You're just making tangential nonsense arguments for no discernable reason.

    You can rank a list of things by preference, even if it contains more than 2 items and multiple items are bad.

    Let me give you an example:

    1. Give an innocent child a candy
    2. Run over an innocent child's foot
    3. Blow up an innocent child with C4

    2 of those options are bad and indefensible, but between the bad options, one is certainly worse.

    Come back to me when you have an argument that stands up to a light breeze, your "all bad things are equally bad" routine is the kind of nonsense that allows monsters to come into power.

    Two things can both be indefensible, and yet still one is preferable. Although you lead with "and", you seem to be suggesting that this isn't the case, which is a wild position that doesn't hold up to even that barest of scrutiny.

  • Sure, if you use your own alternative definition of the terms, then all bets are off.

    Authoritarianism is about how you're pressured or forced to do things, and left/right is about what those things are.

    I know that if we get too nuanced about all the many many dimensions of politics, then we'll spend so all our time fighting semantics and get nothing done. But if you simplify down to a single axis then the terms lose all meaning and you likewise can't communicate anything of meaning.

  • Coming from the other direction - when someone ackshullys a parson, but the person was using the phrase correctly.

    I had to explain to someone online today that "liminal space" had multiple meanings, and it didn't only refer to spaces you transition through, and the spooky "liminal space aesthetic" is a valid and coherent use of the word "liminal" and the term "liminal space"

  • What honestly made a big difference for me was 2 things:

    1. Working IRL for a while so I could see how projects can quickly turn into a mess as new requirements get added on
    2. Learning the SOLID principles and TDD.

    The solid principles are a great guide as a project gets large, but you can't really appreciate them until you've worked on a project that is a mess.

    So this isn't exactly practical advice for you, but it's what helped me.

    Even those stupid "AI" camera features can fuck off, they always make the photo worse, unless all the do is pick a filter and adjust the saturation/brightness/contrast/etc. as soon as the do something unreversable like add blurring, they can fuck off because it always looks janky AF in real world use

  • It used to matter more, back when cold booting was way more common, and leaving your computer on was way less common, and people didn't have a computer in their pockets for most computer tasks.

    Kinda like how boot time on smartphones used to matter because people had to restart them fairly frequently.

    When there is a thing you want to do, and you have to wait for a a stupid machine to get ready before you can do it, it sucks.
