Many fall in the face of chaos, but not this one, not today

  • Not 100% programming but I've been getting into homelab stuff lately. Yesterday I got Fedora installed on an old MBP, and I'm hoping it'll be a good moonlight client to my main gaming desktop.

    Now the living room TV can be run from the MBP and folks can still watch TV while I'm gaming. Then if I'm in the mood I can do couch gaming.

    The first attempt last night worked so well! I was shocked to be playing a shooter like Just Cause 3 without any visible lag. Very impressive!

    For programming, it's time I hosted my tarot card website on my home Ubuntu server. It's been a few weeks of testing the site just by running it from the command line. I'm still a little shaky on the hosting stuff, but I think I'll use a systemd service to ensure it starts up when the server reboots.

    I can nearly eat my weight in hummus and butter garlic naan with seitan tikka masla, very filling and so delicious!

    Or if you're ever not sure you'll get full enough, kick back a baked potato 15 minutes before the meal, it'll give you something to digest.

    Slightly related I'm a big fan of trying to get 30g+ of fiber every day, and 1 tsp of psyllium husk in water before each meal. I'll end up staying fuller longer and feel better.

  • In the USA the big cities are fully paid, the suburban areas are a combination, and the rural areas are fully volunteer. I'm in a combination department, where the paid staff handle most of the medical calls and both respond to fire calls. The biggest issue with growing income inequality is folks just don't have as much free time to volunteer so it's hard to get enough members to fully staff an apparatus. That means paid staff but those are expensive and require a lot of logistics to maintain.

  • I started out thinking firefighters should all just be paid and it's unreasonable to expect folks to volunteer. I've come back around and think it should be "volunteer or pay". We obviously need the money for expensive gear and apparatus maintenance. Also it's helpful to not have to get out of bed in the middle of the night when tomorrow is a work night

    On the other hand, I think it's extremely beneficial to have the resilience of a lot of skilled firefighters in the community. When there's a big call you want as many people as quickly as possible. I also think it helps with PTSD to be able to just take time off from calls without losing your job. So I think there should be a lot more volunteers and an easier path to getting enough skills to become a volunteer.

  • I switched to Bazzite and I'm really liking it.

    I have had a few issues with old SDR software that didn't work.

    All in all, I'm very happy with the change and have absolutely no plan to return.

  • I'm not loving how childish the students act. Most are sulking and barely seem to want to be there. They act like sullen middle schoolers and not the 21yo best of the best competing. The tonal shifts are jarring, from the main character being bratty and whining and then there's explosions and violence.

  • Absolutely agree. I know much more about operating systems and software that the average person, and I've only been able to handle a number of Bazzite issues with Kagi Assistant. Trying to find how to fix something on forums and regular search is extremely time intensive.

    Of course keep in mind that if you're messing around with your OS you might just screw something up and have to reinstall, but so far I've not had anything even close to that. Bazzite seems to be pretty hard to break.

    Really for me, Linux only became fun once I started using chat tools to help me learn how to make it do everything I wanted. And I've been using Linux off and on for work and at home for twenty years. It's just sometimes really arcane, and the differences between opensuse, Ubuntu, fedora, and mint made it feel like I never could learn how to fix things.

    Sometimes things are harder than I want or just aren't working right out of the box. But then sometimes I'm able to do things that are actually impossible on other operating systems. So it's really a trade-off. Also it's getting better every single day. There was an issue I had last month with a controller, I messed around for 30 minutes but couldn't get it to work. I tried it last week and it just worked. So don't lose hope entirely.

  • I've been using Bazzite for like a year now and it's great. I legitimately love using it and so far it plays all the games I like and it's much more stable than Ubuntu was
