  • The message has been corrected 3 times already in response to user feedback and changed its whole style of handling corrections at least once - that is highly unusual (next to unheard of) behavior for a bot? Maybe someone ran the initial text through an AI for cleanup but that's a far cry from being a clanker themselves personally.

    As for the project itself, I did not need to look all that deep to notice that it found several brands that were improperly labeled, at which point I can well understand people upvoting at least a partial solution as being better than nothing being done about the situation at all.

  • How does Lemmy.zip have an echo chamber / defederation issue?

    If it does, this is the first I am hearing about it, and I find it of great interest.

    If not though, then why does it bother you that other people may have made a different choice than what your instance has done?

  • I mean, if it looks/sounds/smells/walks like fascism, then at some point we should start to wonder if it is fascism? Even/especially when people who notoriously do not tell the truth and are extremely well-known for hiding their true intentions say otherwise.

    I am less interested in political theorizing, and more whether I will be grabbed off the street and sent to a concentration camp (personally).

    After all, you know what the Bible says: fuck the poors, let them eat cake easily-prevented diseases and die, no need for justice or mercy, just lower taxation on the wealthy and it's all good bro, just trust me.

    Or perhaps we could be skeptical and not simply do things because people attach a label next to them that we like. Anyway I am not stopping you from moving to North Korea if you like, where everything is wonderful, in theory.

  • Lemmy is ostensibly leftist, so purity beatings will continue until morale improves always, it just goes with the territory. The Left always eats its own (the Right too, though they typically wait until they are in power first, instead of right out of the gate).

    Also, YSK that tankies aren't actually "leftist" - just bc they call themselves that does not make it true.

  • We here all want the Threadiverse to succeed. That doesn't mean that it is going to though - it turns out that it takes a helluva lot of effort, which few to none are willing to put forth (all the way up and down the scale from contributing actual code, funding, moderation efforts, posting more content especially OC, or even just reigning in our most toxic impulses as we reply to one another in comments, smashing a downvote or failing to upvote).

    I do think that eventually, as the technology itself gets better, the Fediverse is the only thing likely to be able to hold the tide against the onslaught of for-profit enshittificated alternatives. Even though we make our own kinds of Algorithms here that allow what can be said or done in the various spaces, almost none of which are properly labeled as such, leaving people to always guess incorrectly and then have to find out the hard way what are the unwritten rules.

  • It's too bad they won't allow funding to go towards development of just the software itself, separately from the moderation and other costs of maintaining Lemmy.ml. As it is, Lemmy is a tankie platform first and foremost, and only secondarily offered for use by the rest of the world. You can see this in the development philosophy even: like even Reddit offers a modmail, notification upon moderation events, and ability to see deleted posts (PieFed offers some of this too), though Lemmy offers strong rights to instance admins, and somewhat lessened ones for moderators, but significantly weaker privileges to mere users (who I guess they feel don't deserve to be told upon e.g. being banned from an instance, and instead merely have to find out the hard way?).

  • Adding to this: a lot of the most heinous, truly "problematic" stuff ended up being demonstrably false accusations - like a feature may be opt-in, or at worst opt-out, but either of those is a far cry from being hard-coded as was claimed.

    That said, the software truly is "opinionated", pushing its own agenda even if you can opt-out of most of it - an instance admin still has to be wary of each new feature added, especially with the lack of transparency surrounding the announcements.

    Although personally I think Lemmy is equally opinionated, just more in the sense of what features it decides not to implement at all.

    Both platforms have their advantages, and it seems more important for an end-user to pick a good admin team that reflects their values more than picking a platform, especially if using a 3rd-party app than replaces the UI anyway. (Though secondary to that, I do think PieFed has the strongest edge, especially right now before the release of Lemmy 1.0.)

  • Of course it looks that way to you, since your instance already defederated from lemmygrad.ml and hexbear.net and other toxic cesspits - see recent example (Lemmy.World's statement and reasoning for defederation from Lemmy.org). The LW admin team does a lot of work to keep things this chill.:-)

  • To add to what Vicinus said, it's like when people get divorced - it's a breakdown of communication between instances, a means of last resort. Here is a recent example when your instance defederated from Lemmy.org:

    due to lack of moderation on their side. This instance has open registrations, seemingly zero abuse prevention on signup, including not requiring emails. This leads to a small number of people constantly creating new disposable accounts for various types of abuse with zero consequences. Their admin is the CEO of an ad company, which surely doesn’t affect incentives. They do virtually zero moderation, allowing all these abusive accounts to rampantly harass other instances...

    We, as well as other people, including at least one admin of another instance, have attempted to reach out to them about their lack of moderation, but we haven’t received any response at all. At this point there isn’t really anything left besides defederating them, which several other instances have already done as well.

    It's like when someone repeatedly sends you unsolicited spam, even after you beg and plead with them to stop, and so as a last resort you finally block them. Incels arguing against it claim that their right to speak should triumph over your right to not have to listen but... that is simply not true.

  • No, the transparency aspect is really the biggest part of all of this. Like, do whatever you want, but make sure to state clearly what you're doing rather than hide it.

    Similar to PieFed's voting quota: even admins were surprised how their own instances were behaving when the code update came through and they had no idea why it was limiting votes.

    Actually, that's always been my beef with lemmy.ml: be loud and proud a tankie as you want to be - OWN that shit, you know!?! - but don't lie to people that you are "just a place to discuss FOSS". Banning people from their instance is fine and their right, but when they are disingenuous about the reason, citing a rule that does not say anything remotely close to what it really means, the way that they wield it... that tends to make people upset, you know? (And there are several communities dedicated to calling out that shit, like MeanwhileOnGrad.)

    Lotta weird decisions going around. I just try to stay sane through it all... and perchance I fail 😜
