  • I’m a system administrator for a relatively big SaaS for a relatively big company.

I was attempting to configure a new inbound email protocol in the TEST environment. I needed to reference how it was configured in PROD so I could copy certain settings into TEST, so I had both up on my screens (you can see where this is going). But first I needed to clear out the old cloned configurations in TEST.

…And not even half a second after I deleted those config files did I realize what I’d done: deleted inbound email configuration on PRODUCTION. In the middle of the day. Killed inbound email for the system for the whole company.

The whole reason I had PROD open was because I didn’t have good documentation of how it was configured (what was cloned into TEST was old and not correct). So now I was seriously fucked. I had to redo the config from scratch live in PROD. Even tried backing out the deletion but that failed.

Had to advise my boss of the fuckup. He was new. Had only been with the company for like 2 weeks. I had to assure him that I am NOT actually a total fuckhead and I usually don’t do stupid shit like this. I felt terrible, because I knew he’d have to give the post-failure analysis review on this to his new bosses, and that would definitely be awkward.

Anyway, he was cool with it. Assured me that he’d done something similar at a previous job. He let me do my thing to fix it, which I did. Inbound email was only down for …well, a long time (3-4 hours), because once I was able to get the config working, I had to re-register all of the inbound email addresses to use it -which had its own sordid story. That took some time.

After the fact, we modified the TEST environment to have a different “theme” (header colors) so it wasn’t identical to PROD on-screen, and I documented the email configuration thoroughly.

  • Doesn’t matter. The people he’s preaching this to don’t read. Or care.

  • lol. My wife called me “cottagecore” because I got a tattoo of a snail 🐌 on my arm.

  • Yeah, his congressional district is adjacent to mine. I drive through it or visit places within it all the time. There are some safe areas, but plenty of deeply red areas throughout.

These people do not care if their representative is a domestic abuser, as long as he’s a republican. They have zero moral philosophy beyond “democrats are pure evil.” I went to a county fair in his district once and the people there were all extreme MAGA cultists, sporting very aggressive / downright hateful pro-trump t-shirts & hats, signs, flags, etc. It was gross.

  • Nixon was also deeply paranoid.

  • This is already a thing.

  • Pedophile-protecting fascist accuses another pedophile-protecting fascist of ophiling the wrong ped.

  • What’s the difference?

  • They were all wearing Birkenstocks.

  • “You’re not mah daddy, a’hm your daddy!”

  • Yeah I read that now too. I just thought that it was weird that they went from “System 7…” up to “OS X” just like Apple did. But it’s just very plausible coincidence.

  • Yeah I should have clicked through to the source article. Good call.

My theory on the System / OS numbers being suspect was nothing. Just a coincidence. I should’ve known.

The article does seem to be rage bait though. Or at least its enraging to those who didn’t read the article thoroughly. It’s not as if the driver is being pestered with ads. An unobtrusive banner on one screen that is only visible when the vehicle starts up is hardly a “full screen ad” being forced on drivers.

  • Has anyone actually seen these ads in the BMW, as described?

This article seems fishy to me. Especially this part:

The ad has been available in more than 70 markets since July 27, 2026, scheduled to run through August 10, 2026, on any suitably equipped BMW running Operating System 7, 8, 8.5, 9, or OS X built after July 2020.

System 7, 8, 8.5, 9, or OS X” are exact versions of MacOS, dating back to 1991. Why would BMW’s software versioning match Apple’s exactly? I mean it could be a coincidence, but it’s weird. Especially “OS X.”

Not that I’d put it past any car manufacturer to do this, capitalism gonna capitalize. But I thought the EU was more obnoxious about controlling/preventing things like this. Or does BMW get a pass since they’re a European brand?

  • So it’s a win-win!

  • You do realize that the “author” of that tweet is dead, right?

  • You do realize that the “author” of that tweet is dead, right?

  • Brown shirts are mandatory.

  • A glorious suggestion! I love it.

  • whatever they do, will always fail.

That last part is where I disagree. They may falter, they may struggle to overcome their massive incompetence, but they literally have unlimited funds to throw at it, and a rabid cult of a fan base. Even if they don’t accomplish their goals, they will cause enough damage to “ruin it for everyone” for the foreseeable future.
