If someone claims something happened on the fediverse without providing a link, they're lying.

  • It's less about how good/bad the West is and more about your perspective being influenced by the West's media sphere.

    For most Western leftists, the only kind of revolution or movement they support are failed ones. The moment a movement actually succeeds and starts asserting control of it's own resources, you can count on hearing all about its worst aspects, if not outright fabrications, while the positive things get minimized, ignored, or "but at what cost" 'd. On top of this is the fact that some people have some perfect rosy ideal that could never exist because it fails to account for real world problems with no easy answer that you'd have to contend with in practice.

    The result is a completely backwards analysis where failures are idolized and successes are seen as cautionary tales. Y'all also seem to think you're the first people in all of history to ever have the idea of "freedom good" occur to them. Which I mean, if you don't, and your approach works, then what do you have to show for it?

    Evil authoritarian China lifted 800 billion people out of extreme poverty over the last 40 years. It has gone from one of the poorest countries on earth to one of the most powerful, it has established an alternative economic sphere which gives non-aligned countries choices on who to deal with (while often forgiving the debts of poor countries). But some sources in the West say they persecute minorities, and do you actually apply an ounce of skepticism to those claims? Do you critically evaluate the pros and cons and come to a nuanced, realistic evaluation of the country? Or do you just knee-jerk accept it and condemn them, wholly and without question?

  • Most predators are built for short bursts of speed so they can rush prey. Prey animals are a little slower but with better endurance so they can outlast that burst of speed. If a lion doesn't catch a gazelle right away, then it will realize it's hopeless and give up. The gazelle will also be alerted to the lion and will have demonstrated that it's healthy and fit, so the lion will just look for easier prey. That's the standard "meta."

    Persistence hunting is a niche that kinda "breaks the meta" by not caring about speed at all. You expect the prey to "get away" multiple times. You can't really do this as a pure carnivore, but as an omnivore, you can gather food while in persuit (helps if you're nomadic anyway). You also need to be able to have other ways to protect yourself from predators, since you have no chance of outrunning them. Early technology (like spears and fire) make the approach more viable, and those are human-exclusive.

    If you drop your whole build to try to counter what humans are doing, you're going to get eaten by a lion (if gazelle) or not catch anything (if lion). And persistence hunting gets fewer kills compared to pure carnivores so it's not really worth it.

  • No one on .world knows anything about Hexbear. They've never been federated with it and they love to pass around campfire stories where the bear gets taller with each telling.

    Hexbear spent several years as its own community after r/chapotraphouse was banned. It developed technically in its own direction before being integrated with the fediverse. This also produced a distinct, insular site culture, where many topics have been discussed to the point that userbase ends up arriving at a consensus.

    Politically, the instance opposes the US, critically supports China and other "AES" (actually existing socialist) states such as Cuba and Vietnam, and generally views Russia as an "enemy of an enemy," useful for breaking Western hegemony and moving toward a multipolar order, but not any sort of model to emulate.

    They tend to not like it when people come in and assert their opinions without first hearing the community's perspective. And as I said, the culture is pretty insular with some people not liking the idea of federation at all. If you're strongly supportive of Ukraine, you're unlikely to fit in there. If you still want to see the memes and stuff, then I'd suggest dbzer0.

  • I don't really see a problem with an instance banning large numbers of users.

    The ability to make exclusive spaces is part of the fediverse's design. Suppose a queer space kept getting flooded with homophobic users, or a Muslim space got a bunch of people shitting on their religion, or something like that. Naturally, such spaces would have a higher number of bans. That doesn't necessarily show an "echo chamber" especially since users of such communities may be federated with other communities. People complain about censorship on .ml creating an "echo chamber" but half the time I'm arguing or discussing things on other turfs like .world.

    The idea that those sorts of enclaves or exclusive spaces shouldn't exist, as is implied with the framing here, is to impose what us evil, dastardly "authoritarians" sometimes call "the tyranny of structurelessness." No one would have a space to discuss things outside of the most prominent, hegemonic view, which would more easily sideline and overwhelm other perspectives.

    As an example, I once frequented an utter cesspool on Reddit called r/CapitalismVSocialism, which was created and promoted by An-caps and where that perspective was prominent (though not exclusive). I found it was virtually impossible to have a discussion with anyone about anything, because even if you weren't talking to an An-cap, they were always there waiting to latch on to some turn of phrase and use it against you, and everyone was too preoccupied with countering their nonsense to reach any kind of high-level discussion. I eventually got fed up with that and found that my beliefs were more challenged by going to explicitly leftist spaces because we had shared assumptions and were speaking the same language, and didn't feel the need to be as defensive. I was never going to be convinced of anything by the An-caps and all talking to them accomplished was pissing me off.

    The fediverse's design is actually quite brilliant, because you can have a space to discuss things substantively among like-minded people while at the same time interacting with other groups.

  • Marxism-Leninism is by far the largest strain of Marxist thought. Like there's Trotskyists (who are just contrarians and sometimes use terms like "Marxist and Leninist"), there's some confused anarchists who missed the breakdown of the first international, there's maybe a handful of confused social democrats who would be Kautskists if they knew who Kautsky was, there's the ultraleft Maoists like Shining Path, and there's, uh, what else? Bordigaists?

    Is there any actually significant "Marxist but not Leninist" ideology?

    Yeah, your political opponents are going to oppose things you try to do. That's not a good reason to not try to do things.

    They can use whatever line they like but that doesn't mean it's effective at swaying public opinion. 82% of Americans support tying the minimum wage to inflation. 60% disapprove of ICE. A majority of Americans oppose the Iran War, it's really just Trump's 30-ish percent "floor" that do. Those people were never going to vote democrat no matter what.

    What I'm talking about the 1/3 of Americans who don't vote because they're politically disengaged and/or don't feel like either party is going to do anything for them.

    There is one clear and obvious problem that is much harder to equivocate: the admin is shitting all over the constitution and lining their own pockets at our expense. The abductions are right there, the paper trail is right there, the election rigging is right there, the pedophilia is right there, the economic and material damage is everywhere.

    That's like 6 problems, not 1. The only thing I'm arguing against here is the supposed importance of impeaching Trump over and over again.

    Certainly, the Democrats have the advantage but they're still capable of blowing it.

  • I would rather have them do "performative bullshit" about things that actually affect people's lives in a real, material way. Take a popular, progressive issue (or issues) and hammer it in repeatedly that you're the side trying to help people and the Republicans are blocking you.

    They could be coming out with like, abolish ICE, end the war in Iran, give people healthcare, etc. It would still be "performative bullshit" in the sense that they don't have the votes, but it would allow them to define a positive platform consistent with the public interest rather than simply running on being anti-Trump.

    They won't, because the interest groups opposing the public interests are too entrenched for them to even pretend to go against them, but it would certainly be better messaging than "vote for us, and we'll impeach Trump (again, with no consequence)."

    100%. I'd be happy to see an effective referendum on his behavior too. Just over the actual bad things he's done and not because the way he dances on stage isn't to your liking.
