  • the crimes he was convicted of are rarely enforced and almost never resulted in jail time against first offenders

This is the same line trump supporters use when defending his convictions, and it probably is true for both. If your in politics you and your family are, and should be, under more legal scrutiny then an average person. That's the price of power.

  • Of course we can't acknowledge it, because then we can't make the same "mistake" again and people will start questioning real causus belli like saddams WMDs which we'll find any day now.

  • Was hoping for a concrete wall, but I guess hurdles will do

  • It'd be coming from the cap and trade sustainability fund, so it couldn't be used for housing, unless you could show that housing would reduce emissions. Still a lot better ways to spend the money, solar and wind, grid scale battery capacity, mass transit and high speed rail investment etc.

  • It already does exclude tesla. The first tax credit from the Obama years went away after a company was producing a certain volume of cars, it was meant to spur new companies, not bolster established ones. Tesla got it for a while but by now they make too many cars to count.

Not sure if it was actually kept in but the tax credits in the IRA were also dependent on cars being union made, and Elon hates unions so tesla was excluded. This is probably part of the reason Elon hates Biden and why he turned to trump.

So you don't have to really target tesla, you can just target large established manufacturers or non union ones.

  • Take note, this is what class war looks like, and if we don't fight back we'll keep losing ground with shit like this

  • While this is regressive and fucked, it looks like lower income people still won't have to pay income tax:

As part of the legislative package, lawmakers doubled the standard deduction for seniors and nearly tripled the standard deduction for individuals, effectively eliminating income tax on the lowest income households.

  • It may not be for everyone. Lemmys growth has stalled out and barring musk buying reddit and turning it to shit i don't see another influx coming. So we're kinda stuck with the community that exists now. Its a pretty good and sustainable community which can provide a lot of general interest posts like news, memes and cats lately. But for other more specific topics if if it's not already a large community here it probably won't be. It's not even just niche interests, professional sports for example has very little presence on here as a whole much less individual sports or teams, and I don't see, for example, a baseball community taking off here no matter how much effort you put in since the current lemmy community isn't much interested in it and your average baseball fan probably won't be coming to lemmy to discuss things.

My recommendation would be to use lemmy for some of those general interest topics, and maybe some of the more popular niche communities if your into them, And go to other places, preferably independent forums or rss feeds, for other things. We don't need one unified scrolling app, it may be a bit more convenient, but the internet is better off if you spread your traffic around.

  • Yeah, not saying you should listen to him. But a lot of people do and telling that audience he's an idiot and shouldn't be listened to wont work as well as playing along and trying to use his platform to promote something besides conspiracies and light fascism.

  • Unlike fox News though Rogan isn't outright hostile to liberals. If you go on fox News as a liberal you'll maybe be able to get half your point across before the host calls you an un-american communist. On rogan you could probably get through a 10 minute Marxist diatribe, as long as you dont use any scary or long words like proletariat, and he'd probably be to dumb to see what your doing and nod and agreee.

For better or worse the democrats seem to have abandoned the identity politics that angered this group so much so it wouldn't be too hard to bring this crowd over if the messaging is right.

  • If we had ranked choice and got rid of the electoral college*

A lot of those third party votes are in solid red or blue states where it wouldn't matter. Also a lot of the third party votes this time was for rfk and the libertarian Oliver, who wouldve probably went to trump so the outcome would probably be the same.

  • What restrictions?, the article doesnt mention any, Bidens ultimatum came and went with no action.

Both sides were for unconditional aid to Israel, kamala may have added some laments about loss of life but she repeatedly said restrictions on military were off the table. Until someone can point to me a concrete policy that kamala had in her platform that was different from trump then yeah both sides are equally bad on this issue. Trump is worse on a lot of others but to a Palestinian they are both bad.

  • Yes, because Israel definitely doesn't have nukes. That would be in violation of international non-proliferation agreements, and they have the utmost respect for international law.

  • They are in ancient history though. They're in the Bible that these people treasure so much, the philistines are mentioned a lot as people who live in the southern Levant who aren't Jewish. After the roman emperor hadrian expelled the jews from Judah he renamed the province Palestine, more to spite the jews then to honor the philistines, which is the name of the region and the people who live in it who are not jews to this day.

Yeah they absorbed a hegemonic imperial Arab culture in the second millennium but that doesn't mean they don't exist. That's like saying Canadians don't exist because them and the u.s. we're created by the same empire and have a very similar culture and language.

  • Your numbers don't show that it's vote by mail. Kamala lost ~ 13% compared to Biden nationwide and in your example vote by mail state Oregon she lost ~14%

California isn't in yet but doing some rough math she looks like she'll get ~9 million total compared to Biden who got over 11 million, so around an 18% drop in another very heavy vote by mail state.

  • What an uncreative and semi-racist insult. These people abuse and oppress women and gays, marry children, run an authoritarian theocracy and you choose to make fun of them for living in a sandy environment?

  • Starting to think this might be the beginning of the incumbent disadvantage as both parties continue to put up unpopular candidates that fail to address the systemic economic issues plaguing the country.
