  • Yeah, I'm with you. I swear it's from the early 2010s during Facebook's peak in popularity

  • Given he seems to have a 24/7 PTSD flashback look in his eyes, I'd believe it

  • I think I'll just take up farming or wood working if the CS field is reduced to just doing PR reviews for AI

  • I'd really like to believe it wasn't a Canadian couple 😭. We deal with Americans trying to use USD here too and I can't see any of us expecting to be able to use CAD anywhere outside of our country

  • I'd vote for that rule example you gave be added to the sidebar exactly as you wrote it

  • I think there's a perfect middleground between banning reposting existing topics and no moderation. You don't want to create a StackOverflow situation where people can't ask a question because someone asked a similar one 15 years ago

  • It's by no means Linux but I actually do find MacOS quite customisable, especially if you spend a lot of time in the command line. It's going in the opposite direction in the last couple years of course but you could straight up run the i3 TWM in XQuartz on MacOS if you wanted to

What customisations do you find MacOS lacks?

  • The Wikipedia page for it is a great read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaver-engineered_dam_in_the_Czech_Republic

A family of beavers constructed a series of dams that accomplished environmental goals set by the Czech government, which had delayed its proposed project since 2018 for bureaucratic and financial reasons. The beaver-built dams saved the Czech government approximately US$1.2 million, providing ecological benefits including improved water quality, enhanced biodiversity, and better water retention

  • I remember our hydro company in my small Ontario, Canada town sending out free LED bulbs to people if they made under a certain amount. We were able to replace nearly all the lights in our house

  • Canada too 🙋‍♂️

  • It's the stupidest thing since they're fighting against UBI at the same time. Robots taking everyone's jobs should be a utopian future to look forward to, but instead they're creating a situation that's universally bad for everyone including themselves. When nobody is employed and nobody has any source income, who's going to give the oligarchs more money via consumerism?

I know a lot of billionaires want to bring back a tech-flavoured version of feudalism where they live like as actual kings but even medieval peasants were given some form of bread and circus to keep them from rising up.

Billionaires right now are on track to create a duel between millions to billions of poor and hungry people against the tiny number of them. Without bread and circuses, the people have nothing to live for except overthrowing their oppressors

  • The insistence on pushing thorns to be a thing again (which I'm generally pretty whatever about) while talking about a heavier topic just seems kind of insensitive to me personally

  • I just wish it wasn't all American politics. Like American politics is just shoved into evert random niche community even if its not even remotely relevant

  • Assuming he didn’t do it (he didn’t), he’s taking the fall for a saint so that’s saintly on its own imo

  • I’ve found it’s kind of a gamble on whether you have a cool manager or not. I have “unlimited” vacation and a chill manager and tend to take 5-7 weeks off a year which is quite high for a mid level programmer in Canada.

  • IE was really bad for web compatibility in that it really did not properly support the specs.

Ignoring that, I’ve found any browser you don’t normally use is a lot snappier only because you don’t have any extensions installed

  • Yeah… I wasn’t actually learning a whole lot. I live right across the river from Quebec though so I’m hoping to move over there to immerse myself in French a lot more.

I’ve always been bitter because my whole Dad’s side of the family is Francophone but never bothered to speak the language with me :(

  • I just gave up Duolingo at 1770 days for French which hurt to do. I was mostly just maintaining a streak at this point and with the news of them using AI to replace their employees (even if they retracted it), I decided to quit.

I’ve switched to Babbel now which has been really good so far
