  • What laws (if any) should exist around recreational drugs?

  • Well, we didn't had any of those when it was decided that alcohol was going to be legal but weed wasn't. Since then the amount of car accidents caused by alcohol was so high that someone invented ways to detect that. Had weed been legal we probably would already have similar detectors.

    But also, those tests are not that accurate, if you use a mouthwash with alcohol you can blow up positive for example, and if you get into the blood tests I'm fairly confident THC can be detected in blood tests. But at the end of the day we shouldn't be trying to measure that, we should try to measure the impact, e.g. have a test where the person needs to press a button when a light goes on to measure response time, or similar tests. That's what you care about at the end, someone might be wasted with a single beer and not have proper reaction time anymore, while others might be fine even after a few. The problem with that is that everyone thinks they're the latter, but they aren't.

  • An argument about emotions can be good or bad like any other, a simple "just because it offends me" is a bad argument because I can be offended by censorship and find your attempt to censor offensive. However a "Currently that word has been embraced by people with a certain mindset, thus by using it you're giving those people more validation on their beliefs as they think you're one of them" is a very clear argument as to why certain words can be hurtful socially.

    My culture is not a costume to me is sorta a weak argument, think about what people dress as for custome parties: Pirates, Ninjas, Vikings, Nuns, Nurses, etc... Most costumes are either of something that doesn't exist or a culture (and sometimes both). However diminishing someone's culture to just the clothes is offensive regardless of culture, and exalting a problem in that culture as part of your costume is also offensive. For example, as someone born in Argentina I wouldn't be offended by someone dressing as a Gaucho, if a friend of mine wanted to dress like that for a costume party I would even lend him my mate. But I can see people getting offended by someone dressed as a soccer player with white powder under their nose (although me personally would just laugh it off, I can see that as being something someone takes offense with).

  • Yes, bad arguments can be made about true statements, but people need to understand that you won't convince anyone with bad arguments, and that discrediting an argument is not the same as discrediting the statement or attacking the person who made it.

    For example, just the other day there was a thread about how pitbulls are supposedly more aggressive than other breeds, but the argument they used was "they're a minority of the population, yet cause the majority of fatalities, therefore they're aggressive", which is a TERRIBLE argument that discards all other possible explanations for the observed statistics. It may be true that pitbulls are more aggressive than other dogs, but that argument will never convince me as it's just plain wrong. And pointing out just how absurd the argument is brought up a bunch of angry people asserting pitbulls are aggressive and attacking me personally for discrediting the logic.

    I used to work with a guy that would argue with me, and sometimes at the end he'd be like "I actually agree with your point, but I wanted you to be right for solid reasons"

    Yeah, I do that as well, I call it playing devil's advocate, it's helpful to be sure the decisions you're reaching are actually the best ones.

  • Every time someone is able to convince me I'm wrong, which is not hard to do, I tend to consider things logically, so empirical evidence that I'm wrong will make me flip immediately. Unfortunately most people use very flawed arguments like trying to appeal to emotions or strawmaning my point (or one of the many fallacious things we all have to deal online). And that will not convince me, in fact it only proves you have absolutely no argument. Which is very unfortunate because I'm wrong quite often, and it only takes one person pointing at actual evidence that I'm wrong to make me realize that, yet the majority of my disagreements online end up at an impasse with the person refusing to find common ground to build the debate up.

  • Yeah, I've had that same discussion even as an adult. It usually follows like this:

    "No, I mean addictive drugs"

    "Like tobacco?"

    "No, I mean psychoactive drugs"

    "Like Coffee?"

    "No, recreational drugs"

    "Like Alcohol?"

    I have never had someone give a description of why weed should be illegal but not tobacco.

  • I also found it weird, I was taught 3 in school, but Plasma was already being considered a different state, just wasn't taught in schools. Condensate had only just been experimentally created and I didn't even knew about them until this thread.

  • It's not my favorite music, but a friend of mine recently passed away and I can't get this music out of my head because we played it at his goodbye party when he went to live in another city.   • You reminded me of a joke. In Brazil there are lots of jokes about Portuguese being dumb, kinda like blonde jokes. There's one where the Portuguese says "Brazilians are way too naive, anything you tell them they believe you, I was in a cruise ship with one of them, I lied to him and told them I was gay, he believed me and spent the entire trip fucking me in the ass"

  • Glad you solved it yourself, but I'm still struggling to understand what happened, how did you have them all in a single folder if the filename for docker compose has to be one of a few predetermined things? I mean, you could have them all in a single file, which makes some things easier, but then you wouldn't have been able to move them into individual folders. Would you mind explaining what happened there so that if someone else in the future has the same issue they might find the solution here?

    Also, note that even if someone had given you an example of a working docker file you would still have to configure the service. For future reference, this site is great and has working examples of docker compose files for a lot of services, e.g. https://hub.docker.com/r/linuxserver/radarr

  • AI will not be able to replace intellectual workers, not as it is now anyways. The only people who think that either don't understand the intellectual work or the LLMs.

    For an AI to be able to do that it would need to be an AGI, which we're not even close to. And if it gets created it's not just intellectual workers that are at risk, in fact intellectual workers would be the last one to be replaced.

    LLMs are a neat trick, they provide some usefulness and can be used to improve productivity. But the moment you give them any autonomy they will destroy everything. And that's a core issue with the technology, LLMs don't understand what they're replying to, they're just a word predicting machine. Expecting LLMs to do any form of intellectual work is akin to saying accountants will lose their jobs because calculators exist.

    Having lived there for almost a decade: It's hot all year round, which sounds like a good thing but it gets tiresome very quickly. It is very dangerous and dirty, but it is pretty and the food is one of the best I've tried in my life, although I think it's not for everyone.

  • You're correct, I misread as "you can't overpower technique" to mean good technique triumphs over brute strength. Yeah, her technique was good, I just stood up, she weighs less than half my body weight so no technique needed.
