  • They shouldn't, but when has that ever stopped them? The (stupid) assumption they make is that the computer wouldn't make a mistake, so they assume it found the exact person they were looking for.

    Judges shouldn't be issuing warrants solely because a face matching algorithm found someone who looked like the suspect, but they are probably as clueless about the technology as the police are.

  • I was listening to a podcast episode that was talking about AI-based face recognition and how it's being used.

    The way it works, you take your shitty, off-center still from a security camera showing the suspect at an odd angle, and you feed it into the AI. The AI searches all the images it has access to to find people who look like the suspect.

    Police take the results, pick up the person from that list that they think is the closest match, then they put them in front of a line-up, and ask the witnesses to identify the person who committed the crime. Once they have a positive ID, they use that to charge and convict the suspect.

    The problem, of course, is that the AI is just finding people who look like the suspect. If they use the tool correctly, they would do some investigation to determine if there is any chance that anyone identified by the AI could actually be the suspect. Instead, they treat it like the AI identified the specific person they were looking for.

    One example they used was a woman who was arrested. They arrested her despite the woman in the video not being pregnant and the woman they arrested being about 8 months along.

  • A few years after I got hired my boss mentioned that they had hundreds of applicants, but my resume stood out because I included a custom cover letter.

    This was my first job after I graduated college in 1992. That was in the days when you could pick up a newspaper and see job listings in the classified section.

    I admitted to my boss that the cover letter was a mail merge document. I had created a spreadsheet listing the name, address, etc. for dozens of positions from the classifieds and added one sentence specific to the job for every one.

    The job was in IT, so it probably turns out that faking a custom cover letter counted as proof of qualifications.

    Every job I've had since then was due to networking that all ties back to that first job.

    Perhaps there's some way to tie the weight of your vote to the ratio of taxes paid divided by wealth?

    So, if you have billions in assets+wages, but pay less taxes than a guy earning minimum wage, your vote would essentially be completely ignored.

  • I had a friend who was married, but he didn't live with his wife. They had a son together, and she had a son from a prior marriage.

    He stayed married to her, but they lived separately. He said it was so she could stay on his health insurance. He also gave her money for her rent.

    For several years they lived in different states. He'd take two weeks off from work to visit her every year. He'd spend one week with her, then spend the second week recovering from visiting with her.

    To my knowledge he never went on so much as a date with any other woman and he showed absolutely no interest in cheating on his wife or even divorcing her. His attitude seemed to be that one woman was more than enough.

  • I'm ok with recording a movie or show from TV. That was commonly accepted in the VCR days, so I see no reason it shouldn't be acceptable today. I have a couple things in my media server that were transferred from a Tivo years ago.

    However, I generally prefer to rip movies from DVD or Blu-ray to avoid the breaks, strange edits, and channel logos that get put on broadcasts.

    I can only think of one thing I really pirated, and that was Song of the South. The only way to get a copy was Pirate Bay. Disney won't release it and won't go after anyone who pirates it, because they want to pretend it doesn't exist. However, it was an important movie historically for it's early integration of animation with live action.

    The suggestion that slaves freed after the Civil War were happy to remain in a position of subservience to the plantation owners is distasteful to say the least. Apart from that, the writing and acting in the live action sequences is so terrible that it's not worth keeping. I wanted to see it once, but I discarded it after.

  • I hit up thrift stores to buy movies on disk. I think it's more than 1200 now.

    They get ripped and added to my media server, then I store the disks just in case I need them.

    While I don't condemn anyone for pirating media, my personal ethics don't allow me to. So, I need to have the purchased, physical copy to keep it on my server.

    Last weekend I unpacked them all with a plan to put them in alphabetical order:

    Buying used I occasionally get one that's unplayable. When that happens, I borrow a copy from the library to rip.

    I wouldn't pay money or travel to see it, but if I happened to walk by it and I was sure of not catching a charge, I'd probably be willing to stop and piss on it.
