  • It's such a great feeling, isn't it? The most impressive example of this I've managed was designing and printing in TPU new tires for my e-skateboard. It took a few iterations before I found the right "no air" design and TPU, as some are harder and less flexible, but in the end I was able to print long-lasting tires that gripped well and were flexible enough to be comfortable.

  • You are absolutely correct, and we are running headlong into a financial crisis that will make the 2007 crisis look quaint. You can run 2% budget deficits indefinitely if your economy is growing by 3% per year. However, Trump's budget deficit is closer to 6%, and his stupid trade wars and actual wars, and general belligerence has been constraining growth and shrinking many areas of the economy. If it weren't for the spending associated with the AI bubble, which cannot go on forever, the U.S. would be in a clear recession.

    Worse, the U.S. already has a massive amount of accumulated debt, a huge chunk of which has to be rolled over into new bonds issued at a much higher rate this year. The 30 year Treasury is now consistently over the 5% threshold, the longest run since the 2007 financial crisis. This is not sustainable, as it inherently increases the financial burden of the national debt and widens the budget deficit.

    Why is the previously so called "risk free" rate so high? Three main reasons. First, the U.S. is not being fiscally responsible, and bond buyers are waking up to that risk. Second, U.S. belligerence on the world stage is terrifying everyone, and central banks are diversifying away from the U.S. because they no longer see the U.S. as a benevolent peacekeeper. They don't want to be caught depending on payment from an enemy that has shown a propensity to sanction by freezing assets. Third, a big reason to hold dollar denominated assets is trade, and the U.S. does not honor its trade agreements so there is a shift underway to trade more with others and less with an unreliable partner, so there is simply less reason to hold dollar denominated assets. There is a reason gold has been in the greatest bull market since the 1970s, and it's not because the U.S. is a paragon of stability.

    How do I see the situation unfolding and what people should be doing to protect themselves? With the midterms approaching and Trump terrified of the results, he's going to do everything he can to juice the economy and the stock market. His handpicked Fed chair will do everything he can to lower rates. Jerome Powell still sits on the board, which has the potential to stymie Warsh's efforts, but only one board member needs to flip to give him free reign, and I expect Trump to either fire someone, cut a secret deal to get them to resign, or use stochastic terrorism to take them out. Alternatively, the path may be the Fed's balance sheet, with the Fed printing money to buy treasuries. The effect will be the same.

    This will ignite a boom and inflation, already an issue, will go through the roof in a way that we've never seen in our lifetimes. There will be a mass exodus from the dollar and it will collapse. It will no longer be the world's reserve currency, and the "exorbitant privilege" the U.S. has enjoyed during our lifetimes will be gone, ushering in what I am calling The Greatest Depression.

    What to do? Buy hard assets, particularly gold. We are at the beginning of the downward slope, and as things come unglued there will be a massive rush to get into gold as more awaken to the events unfolding. To quote Hemingway "How did you go bankrupt? Gradually, and then suddenly." We are still in the "gradually" phase. Don't be caught with your pants down in the "suddenly" phase. Finally, if you can get out of the U.S., do it. This is not a situation that will resolve itself in a decade. This is a historical unwinding that will take generations to recover from, and there will be much suffering along the way. Thank you for attending my TED talk.

  • This is great, as they are providing briefs and other tools to expose the surveillance state. In solving a problem it helps to understand the scope. While I applaud the effort, as an attorney I've found that the Trump era really exposes a big flaw inherent in the U.S. legal system - it needs the parties and their attorneys to act in good faith. When one side is willing to lie and stonewall, in my experiences judges are reticent to sanction and even if they do, the penalties tend to be meager. Even if they sanction to the extent of their power, when the other side is the government with limitless resources, they will fight it to the bitter end, with the end being a captured Supreme Court.

  • Here is a scenario that is terrifyingly likely. To control the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. really needs to take Kharg Island. It doesn't seem like that big of a deal, because the U.S. has the military power to do so. However, holding the island will require a continuous U.S. presence, including troops and keeping them resupplied. The importance of the island in controlling the Strait and the blockade of Iran makes this a critical strategic loss for Iran that it cannot accept, so you can be 100% certain that Iran will throw everything it can at making the invaders regret their efforts. The island is just off the coast of Iran, making it relatively easy for Iran to attack. Inevitably, their drones or missile strikes will have some success. Perhaps sinking a high value U.S. ship, killing many and embarrassing Trump. Trump, a raging narcissist that has long been itching to use the nukes, will see this embarrassment as an excuse to show the world that the U.S. "will not be pushed around", and order the use of nukes. Having cleared the sane people from military leadership, replacing them with his handpicked loyalists, they will do it. Ironically, this will be the end of the U.S. as we know it. To the extent the world's leadership has been willing to tolerate Trump and the belligerent U.S., it will open eyes and turn the world completely against the U.S.. I hope this scenario doesn't come to pass, but the odds of a nuclear attack happening are far greater than at any time prior in my lifetime.

My guess is either that the U.S. will do something between now and Thursday to escalate the war, most likely some sort of ground offensive to take key locations to attempt to take control over the strait of Hormuz, or that he will make the case that it is necessary to escalate the war as part of his weak-ass saber rattling campaign. My greatest concern is that sooner or later he'll reach for the nukes, which he's been itching to do for a long, long time.

  • I just turned 60, and in the wake of my divorce 5 years ago I've made a dedicated effort to get my health and fitness in order, and am now in the best physical condition of my life. As I recently re-entered the dating pool, I've discovered that being a fit, good-looking man over 40, I'm in high demand.

    Roughly half of all Americans are overweight, and I have no doubt that percentage increases significantly in men over 40. As a consequence, I have access to more attractive women than I've ever had in my life, and older women can be quite aggressive.

    In the U.S., at age 30 there are roughly 120 single men per 100 single women. By age 45 there are only 95 single men per 100 single women, and by age 55 there are only 57. That is a massive shift that completely changes the power dynamic. There are a LOT of attractive women over 40, and I'm finding that while I did very well with women in my younger days, that pales in comparison to my experience today.
