  • Anyone knows, why 4bit quant is only marginally smaller than 8bit quant, though? And shouldn't 8bit be roughly equal to the number of parameters anyway, so ~300GB?

  • Wow, already unsloth quantizations available? That was fast.Didn't even know they released the weights until just about now. This will probably also mean that we will have alternative providers on Openrouter soon. Can't wait.

DS V4 will have a huge impact on many usecases. Dirt cheap and insanely capable, if only a part of the benchmarks translate to real life.

Increasingly interesting times for the big US AI companies, I guess...

  • Some comment, as I am running the model in a very similar setup, only with koboldcpp and a much older PC (but featuring more RAM):

I noticed that the speed penalty of using the 8bit quantization compared to the 4bit one is negligible in my case for some reason (perhaps 20%).

So, if you have enough system RAM, one might give this a try.Output quality increase is noticeable, and might be worth the reduced speed for you, if not too huge.

  • Never thought I would feel grateful that the bank notifications I got so far in my live have been practically 100% inquiries to go see my bank clerk so he can sell me an underperforming pension scheme...

  • Well, but still during the eighties most of the houses in my area burned brown coal in crude ovens to heat their homes, the cars spit out blue, only half-burned lead-enriched and carbohydrate-tasting exhaust in huge amounts, while the surrounding forests were dying because of all the unfiltered sulphuric acid the power plants emitted.

During winter, we often had dense smog in the valley, heavily tasting like a mixture of wood smoke and burnt rubber and triggering frequent coughing.

And just staying in the inside also wasn't that great of an option, as constant cigarette smoke was a given everywhere.

If I had to name one thing that definitely has gotten better by an insane amount, it would the air quality.

  • Generally agree, but where did the air quality decrease compared to some decades back?

(80s kid here, so maybe my brain is to slow to realize it, because of the remains still in my bloodstreams of the lead fumes and unfiltered coal power plant exhausts I inhaled back then...)

  • I wish I will still have as much drip as Christopher Walken when I am at his age...

  • Well, according to OPs meme, you are all nihilistic doomerists ;-)No, believe me, my GenX humor is much more stupider!

  • Meh, how often do you really do some serious work where you’re not on your own hardware?

As a SW dev in a predev lab / tech demonstration environment: Unfortunately much more often than you would perhaps think...

  • Naa, we'll be bitching about AI instead when it's our turn! ;-)

  • I guess it is a superposition of both.

Current stage in life setting the general tone/direction (edgy young, sense-searching youth, family-focused middle age, backwards-directed old).

And the time of upbringing determines the content to focus on and the specific type of execution (e.g. when reaching the "old" group some time soon, I will probably bitch about completely other things than current boomers and my memes will be more high-quality due to better skills, but I won't be doing TikToks...)

  • While that has some truth to it, I wonder if it is based on some intrinsic properties of the respective generations, or rather just on their current age and stage in life.

E.g. GenX has been the dominant parent generation for the past 20 or so years. Naturally they are doing dad jokes. While GenZ is young, experimental, and rebelling against the perceived conventions.

But I clearly remember a time when Millenials were as avant-garde as GenZ is now.And my Millenial wife has been on the track to slowly convert to the slightly stupid but harmless GenX-type of humor for some time now.

So maybe within a few years your meme will be almost the same, with the only difference that the generation captions have each moved one place, with GenAlpha superseding GenZ in the lower right corner...

  • I have to reserve the limited keystroke remembering capacity of my aging brain to more crucial stuff, I am afraid...

Also, the tiny time span passing while mindlessly holding down the "" key is a welcome pause to clear your mind, take a short breath and gather your thoughts on what the heck you are supposed to be writing in the comment body following the /**********/ line. ;-)

  • What evolitionary pressure could there be for left- vs. right-handedness?

That's exactly why I was initially so intrigued by the heading:"What on earth could be the mechanism that a bug could have caused this??"

But then I realized we were talking about entirely different kinds of bugs... ;-)

  • Thanks, actually sounds like a useful feature!

Although as a SW dev I do regularly depend on the repeating character behaviour, but usually not for normal letters. But typing stuff like:/*********************************************************/is pretty common for me and would be annoying without auto-repeat of the respective character...

  • How does macOS discern between wanting to use diacritics and just trying to write the letter multiple times in a row?And how do you choose the version you would like to use (I assume by selecting the numbers printed below)? And yes, I have never used a Mac in my whole life up to now and am therefore completely clueless ;-)

  • Well, a guy is filing a defamation lawsuit against others that called him a pedophile (I don't know where the "Homophobic Slurs" statement in the heading is coming from btw, seems like intentional rage- and clickbait misinformation to me). That by itself is surely not a topic the Onion would have any reason to write an article about.

So the reason that this might be considered Onion-worthy nonetheless, must be the fact that he is a gay person that joined the Republican Party, so he had to expect being called a pedophile, because that is the expected norm?Is that it?If so, who honestly would be not concerned about that?

  • Legit possible solution. But I normally omit changing the behaviour of the standard keyboard as it will bite me the moment that I am not on my own computer.

Only exception:I use a similar approach to disable the Tab-Key (and in one case, on a machine with a stripped down keyboard missing the "Pos1" and "End" keys, use Tab and Shift-Tab to emulate these).

  • I at first was assuming this post was to be about natural selection and the reasons for the current prevalence of right handed people.Like today's uneven distribution of blood types caused by different susceptibility to some diseases in former time, like e.g. the evolutionary advantage blood type 0 gives you against Malaria.

So I was initially very confused when the author started rambling about the design of his Wordpress blog instead... 😆
