  • After Covid the recovery was K shaped. So the rich got richer and the poor got poorer. Trump was hammering out covid benefits, which actually helped a lot of people and before that the economy was doing well. A good bit of that was that Obama left it that way and the Republicans were divided enough to stop Trump from being as bad as he is today.

    So a lot of them just looked back and saw that they did better under Trump then Biden and voted for Trump.

    (Biden tried to do industrial policy, but that takes time, was delayed and money was spend baldy due to corruption. However the general plan was decent.)

  • UBI is a great idea, but it allows people to take risks. Including the risk of forming a union, protesting in a larger way and so forth. That sort of happened with the Hippies in the US. It was easy to get a job, so people used that to earn some money, quit and enjoy themself for a longer period.

    That is why the social safety net is as crappy as it is. Fear is the only way to keep the general population in line.

  • Zionism unlike the Nazis is not a threat to western democracy. They want a Jewish state in the Middle East, which is not part of the West. As long as the West is not involved, it usually does nothing or just some arms export bans on the countries and some sanctions on leaders. Currently that is happening in Sudan, which is about as bad as Gaza, but has really nothing to do with the West. There is nothing about it in the news at least in the West.

    The real intressting part is more that the West is not sitting on the sitelines, but is somewhat aiding Israel. It obviously depends on the country and some do not do it at all. However even so, you see Western countries moving away from Israel. All but the US that is.

  • First of all the fabs are among the most complex projects in the world and the Taiwanese will just blow them up. China can do nothing about that. The workforce of those fabs will also try their best to move abroad. That is also why the US is building those fabs, so they can just have the Taiwanese work in those fabs.

    Also Taiwan is a nightmare to invade. It is obviously an island, so you need to ship over the soldiers. We have seen in Ukraine, how fairly cheap seadrones can destroy ships and this is going to happen to China as well. Then Taiwan itself is either densly populated meaning urban warfare, which is really bad or it is a bunch of densly forested mountains, which might be even worse. Add to that sanctions and very likely problems with shipping and this is an insanely expensive thing to do. No amount of chip production is going to save China in that case.

    Invading Taiwan is a very dumb idea indeed. I hope China is smart enough to not go for that.

  • This is why everybody is making "deals" with Trump. Those are legally non binding, but keep Trump from throwing even higher tariffs at them. The hope is the Democrats actually win the Midterms and block Trump from doing worse. If it fails, then at least their companies can leave the US market. It is going to crash soon anyway, so probably both are going to happen.

  • The EU still buys Russian oil and gas. A lot less then to begin with, but still.

    Also there is a clear need for stable reliable trading partners. Given that one of the EUs largest is currently causing some trouble this is not going to happen.
