  • This is my take as well. I will add that I think I'm more likely to notice an issue with the type if the type is first though since it preps me to expect a certain thing after it.

    int firstName will likely trigger more alarms than firstName int but maybe thats just my perception due to familiarity. I feel like once I see the type my mind is looking to make the next part make sense whereas if I see the name first then I just assume what comes next makes sense and mentally move on.

  • You don't seem to have read the article because the government admits that there are issues with racial bias and it's already attempting to mitigate that for indigenous people specifically, but not black people.

    Whatever correlation may or may not be present should not be used to justify worse conditions. Worse conditions lead to worse outcomes so it becomes a bit of a self fulfilling issue. We do not know how these decisions are being made and that the problem. Even if race is excluded it could be using a proxy for race. There should be guidelines that apply to everyone or a panel that can be questioned and held accountable. AI cannot be held accountable in this way so it should not be making these decisions.

  • I've mostly seen people take issue when the government puts controls or blocks. I've not seen any pushback for parental controls. I don't hang out on parenting communities though.

  • It's more been threatened than actually happened, but I would suggest keeping in mind that the issue isn't eminent domain or the power companies (though obviously fuck them, they should be nationalized), the issue is the data centers and the government not restricting those. If more power is needed there's not much to be done other than build more power infrastructure. The issue is allowing these data centers to be built in such an unsustainable and harmful way that puts pressure on the grid.

    For what it's worth, I'm not downvoting you. My server doesn't allow downvotes so I can't even see them.

    I just want to make sure we're doing better for people, not worse. Based off the quote it seemed like a bad idea, but I can also understand just being mad at AI taking over your job. I hope you're right and that this improves outcomes and decreases admin time. Healthcare is so important and is in a disastrous state in the US. I just want everyone to be well.

  • I don't know a lot of nurses, but those I have heard from suggest that AI in the medical field will lead to worse healthcare outcomes.

    In the article they say "Shuler said her job often requires complicated communications, over things like medication changes and discharge planning, that would be hard to conduct with AI."

    I don't want AI in charge of medication changes. That doesn't seem like a checkbox kind of thing. I can see how maybe it could be boiled down to a checkbox or flowchart, but it doesn't seem like it's just data entry. Which I still don't know that I want AI solely responsible for.

  • Considering the right uses social issues as wedge issues and uses that wedge to have people vote against their own interests, I'm not sure what you're suggesting as a solution.

    Xenophobia and Islamophobia are used to justify wars that disproportionately negatively affect working class people. They also are used to justify anti immigrant sentiment that decreases our tax base and increases our food costs.

    Anti lgbt rhetoric is used to stoke hatred against people who support women's liberation which helps working class men and women more than upper class men and women. Caring about safety doesn't make you "gay" or a "pussy", it makes you someone in solidarity with your fellow workers.

    "No war but class war" only works if both sides understand that and they don't. The studies show that. They would rather vote against their class interests than vote for someone who doesn't hate the right people.

    We need to continue to stamp out hate so it cannot be used to divide us. If people could move beyond racism and their phobias they could see the way they are being manipulated.

  • Elsewhere someone suggested it should be mandatory and not an option and I made a similar argument as you. I agree that it shouldn't be automatic, but people should have the option to recall them for excessive absences in my opinion. I'm not suggesting it be required or anything.

  • I think the constituency should be able to decide. If there's a natural disaster or something and the person is either helping locally or somehow affected and the opposition attempts to rush through votes to get a special election where several displaced people may be unable to vote I don't want them to have that power. At the end of the day the people being represented should be able to decide what to do.

    Maybe automatic makes more sense, I just don't love policies where the people affected have no say. I feel like they are easy to abuse. I know they could technically reelect the same person, but as is people struggle to get to the polls. I can't imagine rushing a special election during some kind of disaster. It's a lot of money and stress if people don't actually want the change.

    Missing X votes per term should be grounds for impeachment or recall or something. Being unable to fulfill your obligations to your constituents and still occupying the position is disgusting. I don't really agree with his constituents, but we all deserve our constitutionally guaranteed representation. People deserve sick leave, but there needs to be a mechanism to stop this kind of exploitation of basically an unreplaceable position.

  • It sucks that the world we live in is the way it is because in theory this would be an ideal model for so many people. Older adults I know really just need a Facebook terminal but are required to buy a whole computer. If anything at all goes wrong with it they freak out and buy a brand new one. So much tech waste and so much hardware not being used for the majority of the time. If they had lightweight terminals there'd be less issues on their end but even if they replaced it at the first issue, it wouldn't be an entire computer getting trashed. Since all they use is the occasional facebook the mandatory internet thing wouldn't even be an issue. Plenty of younger people might also be good candidates for this since they basically exclusively use online features too.

    Obviously I would never trust this kind of service for a variety of reasons, but in theory the world could really benefit from that model.

  • There's obviously variation, but I've noticed even within relatively solitary hobbies women tend to be more inviting. If a female friend enjoys thread crafting or painting they are more likely to invite me to join than a male friend. I have a few friends that paint and generally the men will show off their work and accept a compliment, but if you were to compliment a female they will offer to teach you or show you a trick they learned or something. I'm not sure if that's related to gendered socialization, what they are seeking from the hobby, interest in hanging out with me in particular, or something else entirely, but it is something I've personally picked up on.

  • Yes! I'm not on insta or TikTok, but people will share horrible things like "can you believe they said this?" And yes, quite frankly I can because here you are commenting on it and sharing it. It's like people don't understand the concept of engagement. If someone has a video abusing their child, just report the video and potentially send it to the authorities if needed. Don't comment and share the video!

  • It's completely possible wealthy people associated with Epstein had nothing to do with the sex trafficking. Maybe they kept it to normal insider trading and fraud stuff.

    This guy has been separately accused of rape by multiple women, and though I don't have his full statement, he seems to suggest the release of the Epstein files were bad and caused him to be improperly implicated. I'm gonna guess he didn't just keep it to the fraud stuff.
