  • I was trying to help someone I cared about get insurance denial information regarding cancer treatment. The insurance company (United lmao) personnel were the worst most inhumane human beings I've ever had the displeasure of speaking to. I'm nice and keep my voice calm. I used all the right words and requested things that were well within the rights of the person I was helping and the responsibilities of the people I was talking to. The number of times they just hung up, stated they had no record at all of any of my calls, told me what I was asking for didn't exist, etc etc. I wrote letters, I sent emails, nothing. Eventually there was no need for treatment, exactly as the insurance company planed for. If every single person there woke up to the worst day of their lives for the rest of their lives it would not be enough to make up for what they did, and what they likely continue to do for a job. They are likely involved in more deaths than modern soldiers are.

    All of that said, people really need to get a grip on threatening customer service reps. It's not like Sony changed their policy retroactively or something. The whole industry has been operating this way for a while, often even the no disc thing. I would love to see all these people threatening others channel that energy into a boycott or something. I used to play the sims a lot. I already have the game but haven't launched it since news of the EA buyout broke and I let them know why. People will scream at the reps and then never actually change their behavior. I know the people screaming are not a monolith, but either enough people care or enough people don't. You being more threatening does nothing, especially if there's no follow through.

  • This whole thing sucks, but I think the location of the name likely has nothing to do with the change. It's likely where the name already was just for convenience.

    Also, generally they just show one country or language name for things at a time. You wouldn't see Deutschland and Germany if you looked it up on the app. You'd see the one that made the most sense depending on the device or app settings. This is basically just a localization setting.

    If you wanted this to happen then I'm glad you're experiencing it. I don't care if you were able to vote for it or you just hoped it would happen. I don't want to share space with people who support Trump. They are bad for their community (not just cultural community, I mean the actual people around them). This whole paradox of tolerance thing has been done to death. If you wanted "those people" out and you happen to be "those people" then yea, I'm glad you're gone.

    I believe that all people deserve certain rights, but if you don't believe that and someone has to experience it first hand, then I really don't mind you seeing the consequences of your own goals.

  • I agree that the corpos being linked to fascism doesn't make the technology fascist, but plenty of people are switching from MS and Google for that among other reasons. Acting like any interaction with these companies is just as bad as going all in is completely incorrect. All small acts of resistance add up and are important, even if you can't totally avoid a company that is causing harm. Taking a bus is not as harmful as driving a car just because they both use fossil fuels.

  • The fact of the matter is as an AI hater I do actually trust AI generated code if run through the right people. I just don't know when the people I trust will trust the AI more than themselves, and that's part of the worry. Are they going to be as diligent on checking their AIs bug fix #125 if the first 124 were perfect? Maybe, maybe not. I certainly am not trusting AI code in the hands of vibe coders who have no idea what they're doing and are only contributing to a project because it happens to allow AI contributions.

    I also just don't like LLMs in general, the way they collected data, the way they were trained on data, the way they are affecting communities across the globe, and the harm the people at the top of these companies are doing, not to mention the job loss which is really not a main concern of mine. I don't like the idea of people using tools that are so harmful if it can be avoided.

  • It's possible the question was "have you ever been involved in an exchange of sexual acts for money?"

    If you did survival sex work as a child (<18) or had a very awful life experience very young, you might still have to truthfully answer that question yes and that sucks. Of course I'm sure they care more about accepting people that did the purchasing than the providing, since the government is now filled with a people who pay for sex, but either way I'm glad there is a decrease in stigma for those affected.

  • That's likely not going to cover it. They're taking snapshots of what's on screen and sending that info home. They're using wifi and Bluetooth to get your location and information about what other devices you have. Never connecting it to the internet is going to be one of the best things to do for privacy.

  • Are you US based? If so, can I ask how large the companies were? I wonder how much of the effect was HR vs actual programmers looking at a CV. I have never cared about outside work because it's really none of my business, but I've heard and experienced some issues related to it. A lot of people swear that company X won't even look at an applicant that doesn't have at least Y projects on their GitHub.

  • People give money to streamers. There's plenty of data to mine there regarding what the streamer was doing or saying vs how many donations they were getting. You can correlate that across different kinds of streams or streamers and get a good idea of how to maximize extraction from a given population.

  • I'm not super well versed, but my understanding was that watching the preview for more than X seconds already counted as a view. At least it was like that a while back after they were introduced.

    Also be careful because these ai channels are sneaky and will use generic pictures or stills but the script and voice are all AI.

  • What an idiotic waste of money. At least only the dumbest worst people will be doing this. Can you imagine showing up to a place people are escaping due to gang violence and death threats and telling someone who was possibly making below minimum wage while in the US that they need to give you money? Hopefully these people come from well to do families because I can't see them making it out otherwise.

    Realistically these people are going to be taking vacations on taxpayer dimes and harassing locals who already have reason to hate us.

    There are no words for how stupid this is. Truly the worst timeline.

  • I mostly watch videos from channels I'm already subscribed to, but recently a few shows I watch have dropped new seasons and I was looking for recaps on YouTube. It was nothing but AI slop channel after AI slop channel. I would click off as fast as possible to not give them the view, but I guess they will all count going forward. It really sucks because we can't opt out of these channels and many of them don't even admit to being AI anyway.

    I have no idea how this change is good for them. I totally agree that it seems like it'll encourage low quality content. After a few of those videos I can't imagine most people sticking around for another, but what do I know. I'm sure they have more accurate stats than I do.

    Seems to be the same down to the battery backup. I'm sure you could get it cheaper through Amazon or Temu or some other company, I just try to avoid sharing amazon links.

    Sorry I couldn't find mine exactly, but based off the appearance and info I'm pretty sure it's the same.

  • I don't have an app for it, but I have a fully offline automatic feeder. For over a decade I didn't and it was fine but then I had some nights where I ended up delayed on my return home and I felt bad because their bowl would be overturned even if I was only 30 minutes late. Now they have a predictable schedule regardless of if I make it home exactly on time or not and there's an added bonus of having it for pet sitters so they never have to worry about getting the time wrong or forgetting. Mine plugs into the wall and has a battery backup so even if the power goes out it's still going to work for quite some time.

    I definitely wouldn't do free feeding like in your second picture for my pets, but I'm sure some could pace themselves.

For what it's worth I think people exclusively fighting the economic fight and people exclusively fighting the social fight are both needed as there's only so much time in the day for education and activism. We should just always respect and support each other's aims. We're all in this together.

  • I think it's nice to think that inherent to socialism/communism/etc is the idea that we're all equal hence deserving of equal treatment, but if we don't push that idea both socially and economically, I fear we won't actually get there. Maybe after socialism we can work on it, but the idea that once socialism happens we'll all just be equal strikes me as naive (no offense intended). It will take time even after whatever political ideology is implemented. You can make the argument that it's easier to fight for that in a more equal society, which is very likely true, but in the interim you're just telling the affected people that they have to wait their turn for equality.

    I really do hope we get to an equal place economically, but people deserve to be heard and fought for in the interim. Somewhat tangentially, I never liked Platner, but the number of people willing to stick with him despite rape claims was really scary. People are willing to throw others under the bus if they think it will benefit them and I can speak from experience that it doesn't engender confidence in the movement. If we care about two things equally we should be able to fight for them both. I believe in social and economic justice and I have no reason to believe that one will inevitably lead to the other any faster than the reverse (see women's liberation leading to better economic outcomes for women and the push for civil rights leading to better economic outcomes for POC).

    It's very easy to make a "socialist" argument against any group, so if we don't enter socialism with the goal of removing these social issues then we set ourselves up for failure. Is a womb not in some senses a means of production? Should it not belong to the public? If a woman opts out of reproduction is she not in some sense robbing a productive tool from the rest of society? Of course YOU would never make that argument, but if we don't do our due diligence then someone else will. I know there's arguments about what counts as real communism/socialism/etc but the USSR which had no religious reason eventually made abortion illegal. I hope we keep that in mind when we think about which rights we think need to take a back seat to what we view as economic freedom.

  • I understand the sentiment, but realistically we can push for more than one thing at a time. There is limited political capital, so I understand we cannot devote equal time to everything, but gay people and people of color used to be openly murdered. What would have happened if we decided that we couldn't worry about that then and needed to focus on other issues? I think we've come quite a way, and I don't see why we have to draw a line and decide we can stop pushing for social equality now and just focus on class. We can win doing both. In fact I think doing both is integral to progress overall. If we can't stand up for our othered friends then how do we show we stand for anything at all? Taking up just the easy fights is a failure of both politics and morals.

    Someone responded to you suggest that feminism has run its course. Andrew Tate was able to continue to do unspeakable things to women in part because UK cops refused to take women's accusations seriously. He could have been caught way sooner if they had. Say what you will about men turning right because of economic issues, but if men viewed women as equal then it wouldn't matter what the economic conditions were, they wouldn't believe Tate when he said that women are incapable of having real feelings. This is a multi pronged issue and I think we need to approach it from all angles in order to ensure we get it right.

  • She absolutely does not look 45+. Generally I try to avoid speaking on women's looks because really no one wins except the patriarchy, but my goodness that's just false. Say what you want about how she's an awful person, but if you think a 50 something year old woman generally looks like her you are too online to understand what women actually look like.
