  • I'm with you on being against capitalism, but UBI isn't convincing as a solution to me.

    UBI pre-supposes that the rich and their corporations should have a monopoly on the means of production, and you still have capitalism, just that the population are guaranteed an income via high taxes. But the power structure, and undemocratic nature of capitalist controlling everything still exists.

    UBI is some dystopian stuff if you don't combine it with getting rid of the ruling class and the other tools of capitalist oppression.

    But yeah, I agree with you that we certainly ought to be working less than we are (yes, even if standards of living were more fairly distributed to poor countries), and in the future I also agree with you that we ought to be working way, way less of technology allows for it.

    You can place things anywhere down to the pixel, not just snapped to a grid like with Nova (though, there is option for a grid of apps, also).

    It's a bit of fiddly process if it's complicated, but you can layer and place things however you want.

    There is no dock, you can however pin items to show on every screen, which is basically the same thing, so that would also fit that criterion.

    Also 4 swipe directions on icons for extra shortcuts beyond tap (last I used nova, it was just up and down? It's been many years).

    Basically, can highly recommend Total Launcher, though in fairness, I have not tried some of the other launchers listed by others here.

    The one time fee for pro is pretty affordable, iirc. The Dev is also pretty responsive via email

  • They aren't completely equivalent, though it's pretty close, sadly.

    I agree that it's better for someone to get involved with a third party, but if that third party's electoral strategy is to simply try and receive more votes, then they're actively hurting under the US' terrible voting system. (This is under the assumption that this third party is less right wing that the Democrats, and that you don't want the Republicans to win).

    Any third party that is actively campaigning on getting preferential voting across the line by influencing the Democrats from the outside (yeah, first part the post is that terrible that this is necessary), or is revolutionary in nature, is okay in my books.

    The rest are doing active harm because of the spoiler effect.

    "Blue no matter who" is really, really dumb, and people really ought to get involved with groups within and without the Democrats to vigorously push for electoral reform, and better yet the abolition of capitalism and implementation of actual democracy (the US can barely be considered a democracy).

    Parties that just are campaigning on: 'Hey! Vote for us because we're better' with no actual strategy of changing the system are dumb, also.

    In isolation, it's passable, fun even, and I've enjoyed some marvel stuff.

    When they actually try to do world building, it's just so, so bad.

    This is my opinion, apologies to those who generally like the Marvel universe, but I just can't stand it. (Based on the handful of films I've seen or heard about).

  • My biggest pet peeve is doctors referring to medication by brand name instead of active ingredient.

    Should be illegal, in my view.

    I'm a little shit and whenever "most dominant brand name for paracetamol"* and "most dominant brand name for Ibuprofen"* are mentioned by a doctor, I play dumb and ask if that's paracetamol/Ibuprofen.

    They're literally advertising for companies who's product is 5x more expensive for absolutely no reason whatsoever.

    *I refuse to give them free advertising

    I know you're not disagreeing, but I find it absolutely hilarious (in a bad way) that UK political parties will put out flyers of who is most likely to win, as a way to convince people to vote for them.

    All while having rejected bringing in preferential voting at a referendum, not even that long ago.

    As an Australian, may I say, you royally fucked up on that one. We have issues in our electoral system too, (mostly around lower house electorates being single-member, and not say 3-member to more accurately represent the electorate), but thank Christ we have preferential voting.

  • Just seems to me you are redefining the middle class into the working class and are focusing on making the distinction be based on belonging to some arbitrary class. I don't even think the psychopaths we are referring to really care about belonging to anything if they can get ahead.

    Indeed, it's only a categorisation, though I'm certainly not the first to say if you primarily work for your money, you're working class. What class the billionaires feel they belong to is irrelevant, I agree.

    You can mobilize people, but if you are excluding people that could be included or trying to address what's actually an arbitrary definition, don't forget, there are psychopaths interested in taking you for a ride.

    I do not know what you mean by this. If you feel excluded by me then that's not my intention at all.

  • The meme is literally about people are traditionally labelled different classes fighting against themselves.

    The whole point of this comic is to point out the absurdity of working class people with different incomes fighting each other, when there are people extracting extreme levels of wealth.

    Yes, people's definition of working class may differ, but the message of the comic is the same regardless. It's pointing out how silly it is to fight at the kiddie tables.

    And if successful, then becomes the system, including the legal system, and then the same flaws appear.

    There's always going to be problems in society, but this type of argument is unconvincing, considering how much, and how frequently society has changed over the last 2000 years - practically in the blink of an eye in the scope of human existence. The same problems aren't guaranteed to appear under a new system. The various forms of society throughout history have definitely had different problems.

    The revolutions that have been most successful kept in mind the laws and legislation that needed to be changed or enforced

    I'm just saying that the fundamental key here is mobilisation of the people, who are the ultimate arbiters of the law. The law is fundamentally democratic in origin and only exists because we collectively believe in it.

    There have been numerous movements in the past that were illegal at the time, but are obviously moral in retrospect (the civil rights movement in the US comes to mind).

    "Just work within the system" as a blanket statement is not a serious argument to be making when the system is massively rigged in favour of wealth. (Apologies if this isn't exactly what you were arguing just seemed that way)

    No one's suggesting you abolish rules/laws entirely and start completely from scratch. Well, no one I take seriously anyway.

  • Oligarchs conduct class war by seeding division within the working class. The working class fighting amongst themselves isn't class war, and is just self inflicted pain to distract from the oligarchs. This is the message of the comic.

    Focusing on those entities that have excessive wealth and actively spend it to lobby against our interests while paying only for a fraction what we pay for our share can be handled through laws and legislation, no class warfare needed.

    In theory, but the whole legal system is so weighted towards people with money it's not even funny. So grass routes mobilisation/organisation seems required at this point, otherwise, the status quo continues on.

    Especially in countries that have terribly voting systems (the US), but also in those where the voting systems are decent.

    Having the $ at the end would be nice though. It's nice having your units in a single fraction instead of at different sides of the number. It could then be consistent with how we write all our other units.

    We don't write m 1000/s, for example. We write 1000 m/s. We even say it this way already "4 million dollars per hour".

    4,000,000 $/h makes way more sense than $4,000,000/h to be honest.
