  • For me it wasn't even matter of reddit only being tolerable via third party apps, third party apps were Reddit.

    Reddit released their first app in 2014. My email shows I purchased "Reddit is Fun (Premium)" in 2013, and I know I used other apps before that.

    Reddit is Fun WAS Reddit for me for 10+ years.

    When it went away and I had to change anyway, I jumped to the closest thing. (Eventually landing on Voyager.)

    There was also a bunch of chatter about Musk visiting about a year ago, but that never happened.

    So we're just in a loop of making shit up.

    Sure, technically it's been ~9 years since someone in the Trump administration has publicly been there, but Trump's current Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also agrees that all the money is there and regularly audited.

    I know we all know it's bullshit, but I wanted to add some facts to the conversation.

    (And yes, there is some irony in the source of the facts being Trump's various Treasury Secretaries.)

    What sucks the most is that ivermectin is a miracle cure! It just isn't helpful again COVID or Hantavirus. The 2015 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded (in part) for discovering ivermectin.

    It's what frustrates me the most about discussion with people like this. They're willing to take a random drug, a drug that is fully backed by the medical community, but they're not willing to take the drug actually recommended by the medical community.

    Just to be fair, it's not just that it "has a gun", and more that the gun is pointed directly at the protagonist.

    Yes it's largely done for comedic effect and I think the whole removal of the episode is ridiculous, but pointing guns at people is 100% going to cause bad publicity in gun filled US of A.

    But they could have easily just cut a few scenes and extended the Pokerap for this episode.

  • Even with false positives it won't change anything. It's just a small group of people. It's worth it to "save the children". If "the system" rejects you, then you must be at fault. Maybe we can even sell a "Super ID Check". Just a one time $200 fee and then the system will leave you alone. (For 3 years, then pay the fee again, but renewal is even faster this time.)

    This rumor has been around for years and with the "World Between Worlds" everyone assumes that's how it will happen.

    Mando messed up when they speedran the post season 2 story in a completely different series (Boba Fett). Boba needed a better story. Mando needed a (small) time jump and some time alone.

    They messed up Mando again when they speedran the end of the Darksaber story.

    We're getting the film now, and while I'm sure I'll enjoy it, I expect another reset after it comes out.

    Buuuuuuut let Star Wars TV be TV and interact with each other a little bit but mostly just tell their own stories. Pick a new era for films without any of these connected characters and let them build an area on their own. It looks like Starfighter might do that.

    To get the table of WordPress users, then do whatever bad things you want to it?

    I get that that's an extra step, and I suppose in the example even though "best practice" is to add random characters, if everyone knows that, then best practice for bad people scripts would probably be to add an extra query.

    But my real point is more about adding obfuscation for your developers and server owners. If you're making their jobs harder for no benefit, is it a good change?

    I also wonder about adding obfuscation and it causing issues when debugging.

    I think adding obfuscation is fine, but it's important to be careful when it comes to your developers and debugging.

    So the DNC and DSCC endorsed Mills before the primary. After Mills dropped out, they endorsed Platner. And while I'm glad they did, technically there is still another candidate and a write in candidate also running in the upcoming primary. It is not likely they'll win, but they absolutely are endorsing before the primary.

    Developers can create any/multiple methods to interact with Lemmy (ActivityPub). And if I disliked all the methods existing developers created, I can create my own.

    It is my choice how I interact.

    (And for me Voyager is perfect.)

  • So Cohn did mention comprehensive privacy laws and the ability to leave platforms. These are absolutely things that need to happen.

    However as an individual there are still things you can do. Cohn mentions Bluesky because it has no algorithm (except the "Discovery" feed). Cohn also mentions (in the video) Mastodon. And the truth is you don't need to switch fully, just don't only slurp down the concentrated hate machine(s).

    Look at Lemmy. Reddit decided to be pricks and a bunch of individuals jumped over here to create what I think is a pretty good community. That doesn't mean the problem is solved. That doesn't mean Reddit isn't still a problem. That doesn't mean Lemmy is perfect. But that is a win and something individuals can do.

    Additionally, those are things you can do now. You don't need to wait for some law to be passed to fix things. You can make the move now. (While still advocating for laws to fix things.)

  • I also use Debian Testing with GNOME and it works perfectly fine.

    Think of Ubuntu as a supported version of Debian Testing.

    If you're going to build on top of something, it's helpful to build on top of something that is supported and tested.

    (FWIW I also run Debian Testing.)

  • Lemmy feels about the same, but Reddit seems much worse.

    Now to be fair I don't know if Reddit is actually worse, because when I browse Reddit now it's while I'm logged out and via a browser (force old.reddit.com and OldLander extensions). So the site is A) harder to navigate than it used to be and B) my experience is less curated and I see more crap and C) because my experience is less curated I've lost access to many of the niche communities.

    As an example if I want to read some discussion about the recent Game of Thrones prequel series "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" I can find a small community here on Lemmy. Nice people, but too few of us.

    So I go to Reddit. If I search I find r/AKOTSKTV which is fine, and I find r/GameOfThrones which is fine. But I have to know, as a previous Reddit user, that maybe r/ASOIAF is also a great choice. Or if I want some real shit r/freefolk is where the glory lives.

    So for that universe I know where to go. But for a new series? For a new niche? For a new community? I don't know shit. I've found some of the more niche communities by luck. That's what I would have been subscribed to in the past. I would have been in the community and in the comments and discovery was natural.

    But nowadays I just get the front page of Reddit, and the front page kinda sucks.

    But Lemmy? Yeah it sucks sometimes too, but at least there is a community.
