    It's so superficial to say you don't care to participate just because you met some confrontation that you weren't comfortable with. It's fine to quit. But don't lie to yourself that it's Benign. When you're part of a mass exodus of people with similar views during these periods where small groups of people are using bots to sway public opinion, that is worse then deciding not to vote.

    I don't care if they're nazi platform 3.0. The fact is that is where the public is. That is where our family and friends and Co workers and law makers and judges all are and they're getting their information from. Saying you're too good for it might give you a moment of relief that won't last. The views and opinions and shit posts that the right can now lie and spread increases and that seeps into everyday life.

    People for the longest time downplay digital spaces as if they're not critical. Meanwhile they'll also argue that billions are being spent to manipulate these spaces. I argue that part of those billions that were invested went to convincing all of us to abandon these spaces and we did willingly.

    I'm starting to see a shift of people coming back. But people need to wake the fuck up and go back to what it was 15 years ago when we actually shut these racist fucks down and didn't let them spread their bullshit. I don't know why leftist today are such cowards, but if they continue with this stuff they're done in the next 15 years. Most won't even admit they did it to themselves

  • What do you mean try? They are not desperate. They just are doing it. On every platform. The left is absolute cooked. There is no defense from the left against this. The left saw the writing on the wall and shot themselves in the foot over this decades ago. Now the right have the tools that the left used and because the left gave out to capitalism and profit seeking, the right was able to co-opt the platforms and use those same tools to accomplish a hostile takeover. Just wait until the kids today who experience the internet and the views spread on these platforms become adults. Maybe we can make some bean and moth memes until then.

    I went on Facebook earlier. I saw a post in a 'Lord of The Rings' group that shared a meme comparing orcs to immigrants. The whole joke was that the orc said "my son was born in the shire therefore he is a hobbit" because you know. Immigrants and refugees.

    And then I saw a Bobs Burger group where the main post was the family holding up an anti Trans flag. This stuff is daily. The comments are much worse.

    I see this everyday and I partially blame all of you here. So many of you here were the 'exodus' people. Convincing every liberal or leftist user to block and ban and remove ourselves from other areas online. Since then everything has become so much worse and even though responsibility is on the poster, I still hold so many of you responsible for quitting when you're needed the most.

    I come here to lemmy to see if anything crazy good is happening and it isn't. Like 4chan launched whole ass investigations. A bunch of racist morons performed some of the greatest opsec in internet history. Lemmy is posting about beans and moths and I just don't know what to do beyond being mad at you all.

    And I get it, touch grass. But that doesn't help when I log off and go out only to find that the hatred and toxicity from these major platforms is infecting the whole yard. There's no escape. And you people who are suppose to be the resistance can't be fucking bothered. You're like lulled into this weird quiet existence only to be rallied under the most useless civic action imaginable every 2 years.

    I just don't know what to do other than be mad and angry.

    We should be out there. Identifying these networks and the latest strategies being used to corrupt everything. We should be innovating and building protections with fediverse. Instead we got pro China moderation and censorship and bean memes. I don't know. It's just defeating.

    I assert nothing online at this scale is grass roots. The internet is much more tightly controlled than I think we want to admit.

    I think comments from leftist spaces like "Don't roll with pigs" or that they're leaving these spaces was a coordinated astro turf to clean them up to prepare for next election cycle.

Which they have ease of access now since the political left removed themselves from all digital conservations and spaces that are not 100% left.

  • That's fair. I'm salty because maybe I'm a little on the spectrum and just get tired by having one part of an position scrutinized when it's not a critical part. I understand open source has many different licenses. But you don't have open source without FOSS. Additionally, Open source was born out of business needing these licenses to buy in. Therefore open source is driven by business and it's only surviving until they don't need it. Which is what happens when the culture abandoned is FOSS roots.

    Business and profits should be terrified of the internet. Everything not bolted down should be replicated and shared. Music, documents, software, trade secrets, text books, shows, movies.

    Everything.

  • Without the ideology there would be no open source. It's like saying you can have churches without religion. You take the religion away, you'll still have the building but it's a matter of time before they're gone.

    I am speaking of both FOSS and open source. As I said earlier these environments only exist so long as business can profit from it. This is because like you said the heart of what created the environments is gone. When business has a new model, like building what open source can with AI, then it'll die out too. There's a reason the more business friendly one is thriving.

  • Yea which is not just targeted at right wing people. They likely have just as much aimed at the left. They may even want people on the left to remove themselves from the conversation so the machine doesn't need to spend as much energy spreading it's message. If the people who would call them out or challengé them are gone then it benefits them.

    Open source culture of the 70s, 80s and 90s I don't think exists with the same principals today. It's driven by different things entirely.

    Maybe people don't remember, but the early days of the internet people were loud about keeping profit motives away. It was all about rejection of data scarcity and therefore open source was this core belief in the early days that the internet was going to end artifical data scarcity. Information should not cost anything if I can take a book or music or game or file and just copy it.

    That's an insane concept now. Artist need to be paid. The triple AAA game developers need to eat. Info wars journalist need to buy cocaine. So now we shifted. We've let these dinosaurs of the past die. Richard Stallmans no longer exist. In today's world you all would demand Aaron Swartz get the death penalty. It's not the same climate.

    Over time open source is going to starve to and die. It'll shift to a different model. The only reason it still exist and gets worked on today is because we're still benefiting from the model previous generations built. But that culture no longer exists like it once did. It's the opposite now.

    Stallman is literally the example of this who watched the open sharing of software eventually go corporate and proprietary. That's why he created GNU in the first place. Whose doing that today?

    Unionization of the workforce is another example that's slowly died out with culture.

    It's only safe right now because of time and that enterprise benefits.
