  • I just did as you suggested and it worked! Once I managed to get it to mount creating a simple text file went flawlessly - the rumors of my ssd's demise may have been greatly exaggerated. Now to figure out how exactly to fix this borked boot partition / messed up bios settings (I'm pretty sure that's what it is at this point). I'm fairly confidant I can do that now that I have a better idea what is actually wrong though. Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction, this has potentially saved me a bunch of money.

  • ...why not just try either installing another distro like Debian to test it or reinstall Fedora.

    I'll be trying that last since while I did get most of my data off it thankfully (this was a real kick in the ass to get better about keeping backups!) I wasn't able to get all of it and I would inevitably lose some of my settings. That said it will be my last resort.

  • Could the CMOS battery have died in your laptop, which has caused it to not detect the SSD?

    I'll be honest, I have no idea what that is. But I'll look into it, thanks for the lead!

    I wouldn't necessarily call a new ssd a cheap debugging step (for me anyways), but you raise a good point about putting it in an enclosure; I could use a new external drive anyways. That may be the first step I take.

  • Ya, I wouldn't personally call all those orange myself to be honest. All colour names are arbitrary but orange especially so since its a more recent invention (on a historical time scale) and our brains do some funky post processing stuff to differentiate it from brown (which is the mostly the same hue as orange, just dull as opposed to vibrant). So what exactly counts as orange is a bit of a mess even compared to other colours.

  • Yes! While colour names are admittedly arbitrary cultural artifacts, tigers are famously considered to be orange and black striped. The Wikipedia article where you appear to have gotten that image of a tiger from even describes them as such in the first paragraph.

  • Funnily enough this is actually why tigers are orange. Since many of their prey animals have bad colour vision the orange that stands out to us actually looks the same as the foliage to them.

  • It is terribly worded, so it's unnecessarily confusing and unclear, but it means 'nobody says (or does) anything', thus indicating that the second action is unprompted.
