  • I had a subscription to Raspberry Pi Magazine when the Pi Zero was released. They celebrated by including a Pi Zero with the magazine in a little plastic bag glued to the cover.

    I think it's so fun to have lived through the moment in history when a full computer became so commonplace they could give one out free with a magazine.

  • I currently reside in his old home, where occasionally I make him breakfast forgetting he is gone and proceed to have a literal toast to him and eat it in his name upon correcting myself.

    That sounds like a beautiful tribute. I hope I'm remembered that fondly when I'm gone.

    Absolutely.

    Of course, I try to stay aware that my ability to wait patiently for a better world is, in itself, a privilege.

    There's wisdom in carefully iterating forward.

    But billionaires also need something to help them focus on cooperation toward a better world. They need to believe in some non-zero chance that the fate of some person they stepped on could randomly suddenly become their own fate.

    I don't have answers for how that happens, but history says it's almost never been pleasant for anyone concerned.

    I don't know if we can all do better. I hope so.

  • Yeah. I'm surprised businesses haven't been quicker to setup self-hosted Mastodon as their primary, and then mirror that to Twitter and Bluesky and such, for disaster recovery protection.

    In theory, yes. But what early switching folks are reporting is that the total impressions are much lower on Mastodon, but the total engagement is much higher, for the same effort.

    Which is confusing unless we factor in what we know about Twitter farming bot account on purpose to create an inflated appearance of success.

    Of course, there's still the matter of Twitter genuinely has orders of magnitude more users. So as an either/or proposition, no way does it, yet, make sense to ditch Twitter for Mastodon.

    But for the value-to-reach ratio, with the same effort applied to both, anyway, Mastodon is actually already a better value than Twitter.

    All that to say, yeah, Twitter is better, purely due to the user base, and Mastodon's algorithm actually treats creators better. Which we kind of already knew, as it was created by people fed up with Twitters abusive algorithms.

    I'm not excited for anyone to die, but I really want to know, on my deathbed, that I outlived those three.

    I tell myself it has something to do with knowing I contributed positive change to the world for longer than their negative, but I realize it's probably just my pettiness.

    It's hard not to read this as a power play when she was being paid by someone known for memorably misogynist statements, and for needing to go to court against his own sex worker.

    I'm inclined to infer that the worst creep factors of old rich American men may have poisoned the vibe in the room.

    And yeah, all statements about leopards and faces and knowing better apply here.

    I assume Carrie can afford to choose clients carefully. I hope this gives her pause to take stock, and that she moves on to wiser choices.
