  • It sounds stupid (and it kinda is) but modern smart beds track all your vitals and give you a readout of your brainwaves with suggestions on how to improve your sleep.

    I can totally understand how people desperate for sleep would buy one.

    It’s mostly marketing fluff plus that thing where more data != more knowledge, but I do get it. Sleep deprivation is the worst.

    e: plus, you can’t expect sleep-deprived people to make good decisions.

  • These movements will only be effective with wide public support, though, and if they’re able to loop footage of protesters ‘being violent’, public support will collapse.

    Even when they provoke us, we need to remain as peaceful as possible, not because doing otherwise will incite more violence from them, but because we need it to be obvious that the violence is entirely one-sided and unwarranted.

    They’re already lying about us – we can’t verify their lies.

  • I disagree, because I think all of these things address the wrong problem.

    Individuals should be able to gain from their own inventions, and others shouldn’t be able to force them into poverty by stealing their IP. Corporations especially should not be incentivised to do that.

    Then again, unfettered capitalism is geared towards incentivising corporations to do that.

    The answer isn’t to weaken people’s already vanishing IP, but to change what’s incentivised. Also to stop treating corporations as people. They aren’t.

  • No. I was legitimately shocked the first time I heard these things, as I switched schools.

    I stayed shocked until today, though I’ve had to keep hearing it in my small town. For a while in the early 2000s, it got a bit better, but starting in 2016 it ramped up to 1980s levels again.

    As a designer doing advertising work, a local bakery rebranded themselves and asked me in 2017 to redo their logo to Kathy’s Korner baKery, for instance. Of course I wouldn’t, but nobody would have asked me to do that before.

    Back in the 80s/early 90s I would have seen shit like that, but not in the early to mid 2000s.

    From my (very white girl) perspective, it seems some people have hit middle age and desperately want to return to their teens when that abhorrent behaviour was okay. Their personality has become wrapped up in it, and they think being asked to care about others is a judgement on their soul (it is, and they’re awful people), so they’re lashing out.

    They don’t understand they can learn and grow, and instead feel everyone has turned against them, so they’re doubling down. It’s actually sad.

    This is what you get when you recruit ‘regular’ people into your fascist movement – they buy the bullshit that you’re ’for the people’ and ‘want to make things better for everyone’.

    You get people who don’t know those are lies to appease the masses, and think you actually are for those things.

    She really doesn’t understand what her party is for, and instead takes it for its facade. And she doesn’t understand this means she’s a circus clown.

    I’m going to tell people to do more than just vote, and to not think voting alone is adequate.

    It’s not a hard concept. We are fighting honest to goodness, full-blown fascism now. No joke, no hyperbole. Of course you should still vote, but you also need to know that voting is no longer enough. It was always the bare minimum, and now we need to do more than that, because they will not give up power to the vote.
