  • I don't know much about it, but what did they change with the whole Real ID / star on Licenses and such. I believe the purpose was to make it so the IDs were to a minimum standard so they could be accepted in all 50 states. If they all had unique ID numbers (I don't know that they do) they could have just used those, or expanded on those and already have the ID system in place. To travel to another state and have a valid ID, I believe the cut off date is November of this year. (At least for my State, because my spouse doesn't drive and her ID she was told would no longer be valid post November if she doesn't go in and get it done)

  • Yeah there was a codec pack made by klite that I use to download from the sketchiest sites. I think I used to use media player classic with that codec pack before I knew about VLC. Otherwise you'd be fighting all the time to play get things to play. You'd be downloading content from P2P sites like Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, and what not, and coming across file types you wouldn't recognize (and a lot of content that wasn't what you thought it was until after you opened it). Which is why many of us learned a decent amount about malware through our own naivety. Install sketchy software to play sketchy media, end up with sketchy results. But so many of us did it.

    Windows media player was the most common way people knew to burn CDs that most of my friends knew. So you would either rip CDs that family members had, or download songs offline, try to get them all into the same file format and name/organized them into a nice playlist that went well together. And burn them and listen to them walking around. They were a big "gf/bf" gift back then as well. If you wanted to tell someone you liked them spending the time to curate a CD of songs you thought they would like mixed with ones you knew they like and giving them it with a personalized written track list on the top was a huge hit.

    You may know all of this but it brings back some good memories. Haha. I remember doing that for a girl I liked in Elementary School... And subsequently being dumb enough to NOT know a girl who did that for me was into me. She made one of me and my friend because she was nervous about just giving one to me, and I of course thought, well she made one for him too so it might not mean what you think..

    Couple years later in 7th grade she told me she had had the biggest crush on me back then and I was shocked. (Also may have been a clue that I should have picked up on, but I was to much of a doof still.. oops)

  • Also wherever the last hills are within 10 miles of the border there is a guaranteed police officer sitting on the other side out of view pointing a lidar at the top of the hill so when you go over they can clock all your speeds. More so on whichever border county is keeping their side up better.. but if your heading to say Georgia you can tell your almost to Georgia because you can see the Florida cops waiting for the people heading South on the other side of the road.

    (Although in Florida they often lack the hills to hide behind so they often use bushes, drainage ditches and overpass walls to hide behind.).

    More than a 2500 different types of palm trees/bushes. And on 75/95, they are going to be invested with pigs.

  • Webp is a format Google made. Something gave it a codec, so it knows how to open it. It a program doesn't have the codec to read it, no go.

    If you are fined in one state they will ask your state to enforce the penalty and they are usually legally required to do so by the federal government.

    The part of Mississippi saying it may have criminal punishments as well may have more leeway, as you won't get extradited if it isn't a felony in most states. But we don't know what the criminal charges would be. At 10,000 per user signed up from their state though, I'd be weary.

    Just be careful, I'm just saying it's risky. I can see them ceasing your assets in another state because it follows the current laws. Otherwise if you found someone guilty in a state court you would just move to another state and be fine, which we know doesn't work, or people like the my pillow guy would just move out of Minnesota where he was found guilty, to say Texas.

  • I don't need to explain anything. If you want to host something with content that is illegal in another state and you choose to not put up any protections to block users from accessing the content in that state, you very well may be sued some day. If you block users from signing up from those states and/or block those IP addresses from accessing your site, you likely would have grounds for it to be dismissed before ever having to do anything. State lines do not protect you against lawsuits.

  • Meta is actively pursuing government contracts for uses of its supercomputer it's putting online next year and it's AI investments. They are becoming a defense contractor essentially. To acquire contracts during this regime, I'm sure they will give any backdoor and facial recognition assistance the Pentagon asks for.

    Being redundant to say this. People are actively posting pictures of themselves, their families, and their locations continuously and sending them to a government defense contractor. Posting their activities, hobbies, who they interact with, their food, et cetera.

    If news companies cared about people's privacy, they would be broadcasting that on every network warning the population in my opinion. But that would piss off the U.S. government, and they don't want that.

  • I guess you make something that writes batch files. Then maybe move up to a flight simulator. Eventually move onto an operating system, that every time you release an upgrade, people will complain about it and tell you it's worse than it was before (half the time it's ignorant users, half the time it's developers being made to throw shitty things into it. Insert a shit search engine that's mandatory and has a bad track record with security issues. (Grok should do fine). I don't really know if I can find words for MSN... Create a perfectly adequate word processor, overly complicate it for years so it isn't even compatible with its self and wonder why you cant save text with spaces and open it on another machine. Take everyone's emails and store a copy on their machine, while leaving it on the web, and try to convince everyone to get a subscription to type characters in a word processor when the one they bought in 1995 should still work for all the purposes they need it for and send emails which they could have done for free via the web. Add rules and add-ons that will work sometimes and break othertimes because maybe it took to long to launch. Tell everyone to store their emails in pst files. Tell everyone to get away from pst files. Tell everyone to go back to pst files. No longer support pst files because they don't work with cloud storage as they are inherently locally stored data files. Excel.. yeah, why is there macros, if you need macros you should probably be using Access but most people don't know how to use it so all the databases are started in Excel and no one wants to change so you just ask cortona, copilot, nope just go to OpenAI and hallucinate solutions.

    Then say forget it all and go back to a pen and paper.

  • The way I view it is that Bluesky is a new company that is growing fast, while a site like Pornhub has been around longer and I'm sure has a large legal team that monitors laws all the time. If Pornhub said it was better to cut their losses and see if waiting out and or not seeing a good legal standing to fight with these states, Bluesky likely didn't have much of a chance.

  • If you run any instance that is federated and has users that could sign in from that state it makes complete sense to block their IP addresses. Why on earth would someone running a Mastodon instance take on risk unlless they were in another country where there was no risk of repercussions.

    If you're just hoping that small fish won't get fried that's possibly true. But admins likely won't want to find out if they will just on principles.

  • So if I'm reading that right they set for $700 billion worth of purchase during the Bush admin, it got reduced to 426.4 billion by 2014 and they claimed they made $15.3 billion. It sounds like they made a 3.5% gain on their investment total. A win! Yay... Only if you ignore the fact that if that money went in from 2009-2024, the money averages out on inflation to have been worth 481.29 billion. A loss of $12.15 billion dollars if they would have done anything else with it.

    Overall I wouldn't be mad that they wasted that money if they had focused on structuring the company moving forward in a manner that wouldn't end up supporting a wealth divide moving forward. The CEO "only" had a salary of $2.1 million in 2024. Which actually sounds mildly alright. Yet her take home was $29.5 million when they got done throwing stocks and bonuses at her. That's after GM stock started 2024 at $55.50.... and ended the year at $35.64.

    So the company lost ~36% of its "worth" and she got more than 13x her salary in stock and bonuses.
