    Because yes, you can just copy files from your NAS to your phone's internal storage (assuming you don't care about transcoding and the like)... at which point there isn't much use to a metadata oriented media server/service.

    No you do not need to do any of that.

    Or you can just set up Plex to always download the next 10 episodes of whatever show you are watching when it has network access. I mean... that probably won't work (see: 40%) but when it does, it is awesome. Which is the "it just works" functionality.

    You can download in Jellyfin also, like in the screenshot above.

    I mean, you are asking for things that are already in the app, you tell me if that's stupid or not. I'm just trying to help.

    I'd never call anyone even trying to use these self-hosted alternatives stupid.

    Jellyfin devs could actually get the "download the next N episodes" functionality to reliably work (even at 80-90%) it would be a killer app

    Is there some reason you can't do this manually? I actually can't think of any app with this feature, not even Netflix way back not Spotify.

  • A VPN Server on the server or home network (look into PiVPN for instance), and a VPN Client on clients (look at openvpn for instance).

  • Huh? I used jellyfin just fine in the hospital on public WiFi on my ancient busted iPad air [some number].

    The only thing I did was install pivpn and upload my VPN profile file to Google drive so I can remote into my network. I legit never even had to set anything up it just worked, didn't even need to know the IP of the server because my locally run DNS server (and failing that, the basic hostname based DNSMasq in the router) took care of everything.

    I don't even have any reverse proxy or firewall because I still pretend to value my sanity and my time, nor did I expose it to the internet either, thanks to almighty NAT.

    Didn't have to do any caching or anything crazy like that, no idea what you're talking about, but I think there's an option to download the files right through jellyfin.

    I watched star trek TAS while having fun with opioids and it was a great time.

  • Not a doctor but I'd love this as well. I've seen various assorted noctors and nurses and other patients spout some shit that was so wildly off base I couldn't even imagine how this came about or was even believable in the slightest.

    I remember the one time a really good nurse told me how I "seemed alright" because I was decently informed on my condition and asked appropriate questions and it's been in the back of my head ever since how she thought it was a noteworthy exception to the norm that she could somewhat trust me.

  • I prefer online learning for sure as a method of actually learning stuff but for BSc the vast majority of what you learn isn't on your course, it's from the folks around you, and I don't mean corporate networking and brown-nosing for jobs, I just mean interactions with folks outside of your bubble.

    I did CS and honestly that BSc was just a piece of paper tha helped me get an MSc and a job after that, I don't think I was taught anything there that I didn't know and the vast majority of learning was on my own outside uni for which the actual groundwork was laid during my MSc, which was online temporarily due to covid.

    Nowadays I upskill exclusively online on my own and learn far more far more accurately this way. Though you still need folks to talk to about it who are ahead and behind, but it's easier to find that online than IRL anyway.

  • I've never lived on campus and idk how it works in the US but when I'd come in for the lectures I still met plenty of people who challenged me and my ideas and helped me grow as a person. Hell even just taking the subway to campus every day got me to actually start adulting and out of the shell of school and home life.

  • Communes, to some degree, require alignment on morals and ideas of you do not have a state and a monopoly on violence. Even anarchist communes while technically encouraging cooperation through mutual reliance and that if one does something bad the others can choose not to associate with that individual and not cooperate with them.

    Some people take this idea and suggest that alignment based on solidarity of the working class towards each other based on their material circumstances and relation to the means of production is not by itself - enough, and that you need a common "culture" or in the extreme - an ethnostate.

    That's roughly what Mussolini was saying in "The Doctrine of Fascism", and there are many fascists and nationalists who believe communism is possible only amongst white people, or even just people of the same ethnic and cultural background.

    I don't agree with it, but that's at least my interpretation of how economic egalitarianism and collectivism can work with darwinist racist views.

    If you also do not agree with it, that is why being a "brocialist" is bad, you should of course focus in on the economic matters and be a materialist in all things, but Marx isn't end all be all of progressiveness and in the modern day if you want to actually be woke - you need to also incorporate intersectionality into your views of social injustices like LGBTQ rights and gender equality and anti-racism, lest you leave that door open all the way to the 'third position'.
