  • One of my ideas for slowing the rate of meat consumption: You may only buy meat if you are under the age of 18, or you have a Meat Medallion.

Medallions are obtained by successfully killing an animal over the size of a rat, on your own, with only close-ranged weaponry.

That put you off? Good! It should! Some people would still stomach it.

  • There have definitely been times in my life I refused to admit it. It’s more common if people arguing against me are inflammatory: “LOL, you absolute moron! Take a look at this: (well-researched study)”

I think most recent was doubt towards the accusation Chet Faliszek opposed SKG. I still think it’s not quite as clear cut as being an industry shill, but the guy clearly expects more good faith from major publishers than the rest of us do (having worked for the best one).

  • In one story I thought up, this is a plot point.

An ancient race that never lies writes a legend: “This relic will allow one to undo any mistake in history. All it requires is a true sacrifice.”

They define true sacrifice as giving up that which you value most. They define what you value as something you’d protect above all else. This race never had any time travel research; they just presented this concept of “true sacrifice” as a joke and a thought exercise.

  • A lot of people will agree with the base sentiment "Violence is only justified when your life is threatened".

Well, a huge number of people don't really threaten in an obvious way by putting a gun in someone's face. They will cut off people's water, food, or air, or make such things prohibitively expensive to maintain. They will run legitimized "law enforcement strike operations", but in effect, what they're doing is from a state of peace, electing to murder people that have done them no harm.

Thankfully, or not, in 2025/2026, this stuff is a LOT more obvious than it was before. Politicians pointed out how recent initiatives would, provably, lead to thousands of deaths, and all of it was ignored with no counter-argument.

I agree with you about military being a matter of last resort. That's the way it is for anyone sane, and doesn't turn away the base point.

  • It’s a dismal thing for me to say to people:

Game exclusives are, by a given measure, anti-consumer; in the same way that charging consumers for games is. It is honestly a very effective way of building up a gaming community world.

We just okay it when we like the contender. No one faulted Valve for not bringing Half-Life elsewhere.

  • I own Subnautica 2 just to fight contract fuckery, now I think I should buy FactorioSlaveryCuteSim just to retaliate to what Nintendo did to Garry’s Mod.

  • We will mock this, but we all use Product X in industry Y, which is the more well-known brand of that industry. We don’t know that if we explore Z Niche Store, we can find excellent replacements for Product X that can take a little more effort to use and appreciate but are valued more for it.

You can fill in that mad lib in several ways; it’s very much down to which industries you pay close attention to.

  • Arc Raiders doesn’t because it built the value of items around needs other than direct selling. It’s a nice way to get you to think about direct utility rather than monetary use. Honestly, in most good RPGs large sums of money are not all that useful.

  • I readily acknowledge that 90-99% of poor pet experiences are because of impatient owners that can’t work within their pet’s animal limitations and habits.

But I don’t think people realize there are a minority of animals that are just mean. They understand what is wanted, they don’t need to do the things they do, but they do them anyway, and don’t care about the harm they cause.

  • Since Batman has been mentioned a bunch, you may like a twist on his formula. In the Absolute Batman comics, Bruce Wayne isn’t rich at all - and engineered some of his gadgets off his job at a construction site. But The Joker? Obscenely rich.

  • The worst part is that a rich person hears this and thinks about all they’d have to sacrifice to have empathy for these people. But then there’s the part you mentioned: “could have recovered and lived productive lives”. Many aren’t just going to flip burgers at Burger King, they’d be the one inventing a new burger that tastes better, wins the company tons of money, and makes people happy.

Productivity is the tide that lifts all ships, and we’re actively firing at the floor of the boat with a machine gun.

  • China, right? Yeahhh…

It sucks because I’ve been hearing about advances in social living out there, as well as seeing its indie game development scene explode, and I’m pretty envious and supportive - but I’m also absolutely going to highlight the worst of their government.

But unlike America, they don’t seem to have a notion of separating the government from its people. I know a random Chinese gamer isn’t responsible for Uyghur Muslim genocide. They still regard it as “xenophobia”, or “ignoring America’s crimes”.

  • I could say consistency is a good design pattern.

  • The two hurdles I see are viewership (current inertia has everyone browsing on YouTube) and monetization (people rely on ad money that comes from those watching 30sec of insurance slop).

There are weaknesses in YouTube, like algorithms forcing creators to reach the 10 minute mark, or unfair content ID detection, but we might need a good corporate player to invent something against them. And I do mean a company - content creation is a business for a lot of people, not just an open source project.

  • Well, casey beat me to it. By default anything you've grabbed from the internet or a flash drive won't have execute permissions on it, so it's intentionally more obtuse to run than Windows' simple "Are you sure you want to run this unknown publisher" dialog.

  • I feel weird even about wearing my sunglasses indoors. I do it only because I like bringing one pair out the door, it's very sunny out, and they're long-range prescriptions that help me read menus and signs.

Aside from the cameras, the obvious issue, as is with cops, is just constantly hiding your eyes for little reason.

  • In both cases, just a bit of a reboot.

Like, I still don’t understand how Nier tried to make death this big important momentous thing in these scenes, while also showing both of them die in the first fight of the game, after opening lines about being sick of dying repeatedly.

Fittingly, I’m also sick of rebooting stalled machines.

  • It was tricky to get used to the Linux mentality of not really having a dedicated double-clickable “executable type”. But it makes sense - if you want to run code, that should be a planned action by an app that is dedicated to the task of setting up new code. (Package manager, IDE)

  • A thought experiment you could take further.

The chef didn’t even make the dough. That came from a Cisco truck, from a factory maintained by a team of maintenance workers. The base was good, but made better because the chef added some flour and oil to it.

Pointless observation, but…many people contribute to most things we only associate to one “maker”.
