But if you think about the military uses: You could light up the night in Gaza or Fallujah, making for easier observation of insurgents. Make the sky blink over russian refineries, confusing air defense. Spot sea drones in front of your ports. Eternal sunshine around US military bases and on the Ukrainian front.

  • Let's be honest here: A smartphone costs the same to develop, produce and so on, regardless of if you simply buy it or rent it. The companies need their profit, so they will not start renting you a phone when it is more profitable to sell it to you. It should make you suspicious that they want you to rent, because that kind of tells you that they will make more profit from renting than selling. That means that you will pay more for your phone in the long run without owning it.

  • I guess that they are implementing crappy cameras? Not sure about american plates, but in most jurisdictions licence plates are optimized for easy OCR:

    Note how each letter is unique and can't be transformed with a sharpie into another. That also makes OCR easy. If you use a crappy dashcam, you will get problems regardless. Esp. in low light situations at higher speeds.

    So I would guess that Flock uses cheap sensors and cheap lenses. Which kind of makes sense when they are putting out thousands of scanners.

  • We really do need a way to send companies to prison. If you behave like that as an individual, you are getting jailed. We obviously can't jail a company, but simply slapping some fine on them for criminal behaviour while their henchmen might get prison time is not the best way forward. So we might need something like "if your company is doing crimes, it gets disbanded" or so.

  • The bigger problem is that AI tools have ingested a lot of copyrighted and FOSS code and totally will use that code in your projects. So even if AI output can't be copyrighted, you are still on the hook if your AI copies copyrighted code into your own project. People will notice if your project just changed the variable names

  • I'm working in a bigger company and we have processes for new software. Of course not everybody can simply install new software on their devices. It goes through a process for approval and there are some people checking a few checkboxes before you can use new software. Simple stuff like "can our existing software really not cover this use case", "where do licenses fit in our budget?", "Does this software have known security issues?" or "Is it a reliable vendor?" and so on. This is something you really have to do in order to do reasonable security and data protection. If you simply let everyone install everythin, you will get hacked. OpenAI admitting that their software is going around committing crimes on its own is quite something in this context.

    And then Facebook killed it. They started to hide the posts of your friends. They showed you some shit from some "page" or shoveled rage-baiting news in your face. They pushed Farmville everywhere. But that short little moment in time? That was awesome
