  • Recently it occurred to me that in the US we have 25¢ coins but $20 bills. It never bothered me before but it's really odd. Especially when many other countries have 20"¢" coins.

  • I hear this type of take often but I'm skeptical that it happened (originally heard it as McDonald's doing it, not A&W) and I'm skeptical that it's the reason it failed.

    You could test this by setting up a food stall that sells something like this as a control.

    1. 6 pc for $5
    2. 9 pc for $5
    3. 12 pc for $9

    Then do something similar with the burgers. See how many people inherently want more for the same price. Then switch it up so the middle one is cheaper. Switch the ordering of the lists as well. Etc.

    Do I think some people just don't understand fractions and think third is less? Sure. But I think there are too many variables to say that's it alone. If someone is that bad with math, it's gonna matter if you write it as ½ ⅓ ¼ or half third quarter. Then it's gonna matter if they ask what the ⅓ means versus if the cashier asks if they want "half, third, or quarter".

    All that to say, I think there are definitely some people who don't inherently want more food, even if it's the same price (and maybe even if it's cheaper) and I'm not sure how many people like that there are versus people who are bad at the math aspect. Throw in stuff about how the menu is presented and I just don't see how we can really come to this conclusion.

    Shout out to the time my buddy realized it was 1¢ cheaper to get two 6 of meals than one 12 pc meal. (Basically 6 of was like $5.99 and 12 pc was like $11.99 or whatever.)

  • I thought WSL2 had a few specific advantages over WSL1, something about disk writes and/or Docker? But yeah, WSL1 was such a cool concept. My understanding is they implemented all the syscalls and API in it so it's basically native.

    I tried to use them, as I do most tools like that. On Windows I have always stuck with the MSYS environment that Git for Windows gives you. It's easy enough to work with and has most everything I care about. Plus it's easy to set up. With wsl it's more like a separate thing, it wasn't as easy to run in place. A lot of times I still used batch or powershell scripts so it wasn't totally bash. Like Docker is easier to use from not bash in Windows because the syntax is so wonky.

    But now I don't use Windows at all.

  • If I'm doing something in a language I only half way know and rarely use in depth I'll use them more. Like bash scripting I use them all the time. For Java I basically never touch them because I don't need them.

  • I've had text books that have page numbers in the corner as chapter-number. It's not unheard of. When I was in JROTC in highschool the cadet field manual had pages like this. I'm sure others did too but I specifically remember that one more because I was there for four years. (Had to be there for riflery team.)

  • If instance A stops existing, instance B doesn't have any specific knowledge of that versus it no longer federating. Existing posts and comments will stay. My instance is no longer federated with some, but I still see the communities from them.

  • I think I only call it Max instead of HBO or HBO Max less than 25% of the time. This rebrand was goofy. Still not as bad as Twitter's.

  • One of my biggest gripes about the fediverse (and honestly any online community) is people making increasingly niche places to discuss things before there is a need to split things due to size. I'd post that to something like a general hobbies group. I'd also say mods need to be less strict about what is and isn't on-topic while there isn't much traffic in their communities.
