  • Was scrolling my account history and came upon this old post, in which many people, yourself included, expressed disbelief that Meta was knowingly taking money to foment genocide, which we learned when Careless People was released, was absolutely the case. And we learned just this week, Meta been paying Nazis to post on Facebook.

I wonder what the line is, for people in general.

  • Listen, everything that they are doing by scorching the planet and turning the tap water brown, could be achieved on CPU or much smaller GPUs on local machines - it's a question of focused, tight training. What they're doing instead is literally attempting to build gigantic models that take in absolutely everything (burning real books in the process because fuck history we got money to make) and attempting to sell the idea that this brute force, one-thing-does-it-all approach, which requires us to give up everything else that is good in the world, is the only way forward, and yes, we must build the roko basilisk now.

    It's a big, big grift.

  • I have always felt surrounded by right wing bullshit, on previous socials and in life.

This is the only place where I look around, and believe that it is people further to the left of me that are maybe taking things a bit far. I do NOT, for the record, agree with the apologists who want us to let more fash in, I like being in a place where I am, for once, the moderate.

  • Have to say, when I'm strictly looking for hard info, like, what are the command line switches to achieve the right config for a thing, the AI is pretty much always right. It's not without use, but Doing Things For You is not its best use.

  • That depends on what you are calling Capitalism. I'm all for free markets and such, but Capitalism was never anti-feudal - first thing the Burghers did was marry their kids into Noble families. It was strictly about adding "man with enough money that he doesn't work" to the protected class.

  • Never has it been more clear what Capitalism is. It has fuckall to do with freedom and everything to do with sharecropping.

  • If you're running a site that anyone from the public can sign up to, resources are not some afterthought you add to your argument like pepper. Resources are everything. I have been on this Internet since NCSA Mosaic; look up the term "hugged to death".

  • NYPA

  • Sometime in the last two years, the number of people consider themselves to be programmers has at least doubled. We have a giant contingent of people who have never gone through the hell of actually developing a skill but are now "developers" in much the same way that typing "make me a song like ______" now makes you a musician. No theory, no chords, no building of callouses, just load up our AutoPlagio and dance the night away!

And these sudden Developers and such are all very upset at having their legitimacy questioned by a bunch of... of... NERDS.

  • Response guy seems to think that "legitimate crypto" is a thing.

My SSH keys are legitimate crypto. Fake money for criminals is not legitimate.

  • It would be accurate to say that the Internet reached a critical mass of user in 1995. I was here in 1992, and 95 is when media started talking about the internet as a necessary thing for businesses etc to get onboard with, and by extension, when loads on servers started to get wild. A communal pool of servers for the web community to lean on during times of extreme demand is still an excellent idea that can solve a lot of problems, but not if we let capitalists run it for profit. Never work.

  • Whichever side of this you land on... confirmation bias is a hell of a drug.

  • Selfhosted @lemmy.world

Ebook host that tracks your reading in its own Web UI? Does it exist?

  • If you have a fridge with an app

    GET OUT

  • They're not handing over private crypto keys here. It's a database entry that the person installing the system can put whatever they like in.

  • Understand what a Reverse Proxy is, because you will not escape reading that phrase.

Host things with Docker for now. If you don't start hosting until you understand everything, you won't start for a long time and that is silly.

Use Cloudflare for now, because they handle a lot of security stuff for you that you definitely don't want to screw up. If you don't know what Cloudflare is, read up on CDNs and why they exist. Their Zero Trust Tunnel is the easiest and safest way to go, as long as you don't plan to do anarchy or sedition on it, just talk about your household plants and dogs and what not and you're fine.

  • In other news, Windows has Linux built-in now, so you don't need to ever install it yourself!

  • The very first time I debated a christian about this, in 1992, I asked them what about back alley abortions, and he said he would charge all concerned, the conceivers and the abortionists, with murder.

They've been telling us the whole time this was their ultimate intention.

  • My bad, I was a kid during his Oilers days and I mean, look at him...

  • I also didn't know what it was when I discovered their forum, which is a combination of kool-aid addled VCbrains and tech geeks having normal, informed conversations about tech stuff. I was hanging out there for a while, until I realized.
