  • Heck, if energy density is an issue the use this initially for grid storage, home solar, etc. where a larger size isn’t a huge deal. That would increase existing lithium ion supplies for EVs.

  • I’ve never seen a Waymo in person but I’ve seen plenty of edge cases while driving that I wonder how any self driving car would handle it.

    Just one recent example: I was at a red traffic light crossing another road that had virtually no visibility to the right due to thick vegetation. Just as the light turned green I heard the sirens of approaching fire trucks from the direction where I couldn’t see. I waited, and didn’t actually see them until they were about 20 feet from the intersection. My gut feeling is that pretty much any self driving car would have seen the green light and then driven right into the path of those approaching emergency vehicles. And what would have happened next? Would the self driving car have slammed on the brakes once it saw the fire trucks? Would it have just continued, forcing the fire trucks to stop?

  • VPNs are too complex for non-technical people. I used to work in IT for a big university. When I managed the installation of a large research cluster they insisted it be publicly accessible so that traveling professors, etc. would have easy access to it. Long story short, I found it had been compromised by an IP address in China within hours of it being on-line.

  • I’d be very careful about using copper this way. While ingesting small amounts of copper is ok, and in fact a good part of a diet, Ingesting too much copper is not a good thing, and can be toxic.

    Having copper piping, etc. in close proximity to a garden risks having it leach into the plants, which might then be ingested. Since copper is a fairly soft metal then rain could slowly corrode it and introduce it to the plants.

  • A decade or so ago National Geographic had a reality TV show called Worlds Toughest Fixes, where they went around and documented all sorts of major repair & other big construction jobs. One episode had them replacing the steam turbine in a nuclear power plant. I really enjoyed that series.

    Some other fixes they documented included a valve on the Alaska oil pipeline, replacing an antenna on a 2000 foot tall tower, and launching a rocket in French Guiana. It’s a fun series if you’re into this kind of stuff.

  • Yeah, I use it for some programming tasks as well. I’m sick and tired of telling it that it did something wrong or simply omitted something, only to have it apologize and offer to fix its own mistakes.
