    It wasn't until modern times that we all forgot about the origins of the name and just associated it to some demonic spirit that lives in hell. Old ancient traditions are more complex and elaborate than our simplistic ideas of right/wrong, good/bad, heaven/hell, angel/demon.

    In one of the books by Arthur C Clark that are sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey ... (spoiler alert for anyone who hasn't read the books yet) ... future civilizations end up collapsing Jupiter, a gas giant that is thought to be a failed double star to our sun ... when Jupiter collapses into a new smaller star, it is named 'Lucifer' - the bringer of light

  • Got that covered .... I'm still going through my excess toilet paper supply I bought during the start of the 2020 pandemic. When people started clearing the shelves of toilet paper, we panicked and bought several whole cases of the stuff. It was completely insane.

    I haven't bought toilet paper in five years.

  • I'm up in Canada and we have provinces here ... I live in Ontario and in the year 2000 me and a friend took a motorcycle ride across Canada to the west coast. Great trip.

    But for motorcycle riders in Ontario, especially northern Ontario, its famous for rain during the summer, especially when you want to go riding. Sure enough in the first week of July that we started our trip, trying to make sure to catch the best weather for riding, we rode through rain for about three days as we drove through northern Ontario.

    The funniest thing was ... as soon as we crossed the Ontario/Manitoba border, the skies parted and I could literally see dark clouds over Ontario and bright clear summer skies to the west .... right at the border of the two provinces.

    We had great weather the rest of the trip! ... and sure enough when we did the return trip, we were rained on again in northern Ontario!

    Many episodes are a commentary on the Vietnam War which was heavily in the headlines at the time. Several episodes directly parallel what was happening in Vietnam at the time.

  • lol .... I loved that first landing in ENT when the crew go exploring a new planet .... and Porthos just disappears into the bushes sniffing, scratching and probably peeing and pooping on everything.

    If that ever happens in the future ... we'll probably be responsible for introducing planet wide diseases or viruses to any new place we visit ... or in bringing back some pathogen that will kill all of us at home.

    I watched a documentary a while ago about how crematoriums in Eastern Europe, especially in war torn areas like Ukraine, routinely collect bodies and then spend the time cutting up the bodies while in their care for organ harvesting. One of the biggest businesses out there apparently is bone harvesting .... bone material that is used for dentistry, bone repair and all kinds of things. Bone grafts and powder that makes its way to the medical market in first world countries like the US and Canada.

    It made me think of the process of having a tooth pulled ... they often use bone grafts to help the healing process of a newly extracted tooth. That bone graft material had to come from somewhere.

    Once the body is in the care of a private business .. who knows what they do with it. Then the body is cremated and no one would ever know that the body had been disrupted and cut up.

    I don't think stuff like that happens in Canada or US ... but we do just blindly put our full trust in these business to collect, store and process dead bodies for us without much oversight or monitoring. Part of the documentary did mention that in the early 2000s, there was one morgue in New York state that had someone dissect bodies to collect parts illegally before they were found out. After that, they had to tighten up laws and security and regulations dealing with the dead.

    I felt weird just mentioning all this so I went to look up the documentary .... here it is ...
