Create a society where you ban extreme wealth.
You allow people to gain wealth, as much as they want but you create an upper ceiling .... like say 100 million. Beyond that, any further wealth you create is just sent to the government as taxes and spent on public services and infrastructure and on other less fortunate people.
Wealth is also not inherited and when you die, a small part of your wealth is passed to your descendants but the majority is given over to the government to again be used for taxes, infrastructure and public services.
Humans will always be greedy bastards and there will always be people who will game the system in their favour for whatever psychotic or manic reason they have (similar to people with hoarding mentalities or people who collect cats or bottle caps) ... in this suggested society, people would still be allowed all the freedoms to fulfill their fantasies or manias within a controlled environment and not to the point where they are degrading all of humanity in the process.
UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME
And as you create an upper ceiling of wealth, you also create a lower floor of poverty ... you use all that extra money and institute Universal Basic Income and allow every able bodied human an equal opportunity to become as much of a greedy bastard as they want and start to gain their own wealth. Or they use their good start in life, generate a bit of wealth, get an education and find the cure for cancer. Imagine if we had thousands or even millions of scientists who no longer have to worry about making rent and instead spend their time trying to find cures for things or finding new solutions to the energy crisis or environmental problems like global warming.
Instead .... we have a world where we funnel all the wealth of the world to a small group of people who sit on it, defend it at all costs and send humanity to its doom while billions of people either starve, near starve or spend all their time and energy just barely getting by.

I grew up in the 80s and I never saw the Original Series but I saw a few of the movies and I always looked up to the characters of Kirk, Spock and McCoy and all the others. I was a teen when TNG started but we didn't have full access to cable TV so I only ever watched a handful of episodes but I loved them all ... because like you said, it gave a sense of hope and optimism for the future.
It's been so much fun over the past 10/15 years that I slowly got to watch all or most of the Star Trek I missed out on. It's getting to the point of being able to rewatch them all again and I don't mind.

My condolences to you and your family
It's all fun and games to talk about tragedies of unknown strangers like this on a random internet forum but every time I come across this story, it sends shivers down my spine to think of what happened. It was an innocent decision that led to a dangerous life threatening event.
If any thing good came out of it, it's made me even more careful about life and taking unnecessary chances. I'm older now and I think about things more. I ride motorcycle and every time I get the urge to want to speed up, run through a tight corner or dip into a dangerous situation, I think twice, slow down and take my time or even just stop and let everything and the danger pass. I do the same when driving in a car down the highway .... everyone can pass me, I don't care ... I can be late, I don't care ... I'll even turn around and go home if the weather is bad or I just don't feel good about it .. as long as everyone is safe and sound, there's no need to endanger one's life, if we don't have to.

I'm Indigenous Canadian .. full blooded Cree/Ojibway from northern Ontario. My family has had a long history of being under the thumb of government.
And as an Indigenous person, I've seen recent examples of what my government would do to me if I violently resisted ... in 1990 the Canadian government called in our national armed forces to contain Mohawk land protesters in Oka, Quebec ... in Stoney Creek in Ontario in Sept 1995, our Ontario government allowed our provincial police to use violent force and kill an Indigenous protester Dudley George who was protesting against illegal land title ... in 2020 the Canadian government used the national RCMP police in military tactical gear to raid at gunpoint unarmed Wetʼsuwetʼen First Nation land protesters who were blockading oil pipeline projects.
It's a fine line that both sides play in the debate for equal rights, tolerance and justice ... the right want to push the debate far enough to make an excuse to want to start killing people and use death as an instrument of control ... the left want to push the debate far enough to not have to cause bloodshed .. both sides accuse the other of leading everyone down a bloody path.
But in all that I agree ... use love and peace and resistance first ... but if all else fails and everyone is left with nothing to lose, then there is nothing to lose.
If you want an example of not falling into the darkness of fighting fire with fire .... look at what Martin Luther King accomplished through peaceful protest and non-violence in the 1960s ... sure he was killed in the process but everything he did and led ushered in a new wave of peace and prosperity for minority rights everywhere. He might have been killed for being peaceful .. but he accomplished so much more through love and standing with your fellow man against intolerance and injustice.

I absolutely abhored Charlie Kirk and everything he stood for and in a macabre way, I'm happy that he won't be able to spout all the stupidity he's been pushing for years ... but at the same time, I won't celebrate the death of a human being, no matter who they were ... no matter how much I hated them.
I have enough darkness and despair in my heart already, I won't add to that blackness by joining in the depravity
