  • Fourth, the corporate team’s decision making is bad enough to be harmful / fatal in and of itself. It’s sheer luck they’ve done as well as they have this long. Corporate is not only the worst enemy of users and communities, they’re also their own worst enemy. It’s so bad that if one of them was a competitor or adversary that had infiltrated the company in a covert operation to destroy it or gum it up, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference.

  • A single, seedless grape. I didn't think it was a big deal at first, but googled it and apparently dogs can die from eating a grape. A £200 quid emergency vet bill, and an hour or so of collecting dog vomit later and he was pronounced safe. Worth it.

  • NYT Cooking is pretty good but my GOAT is Felicity Cloake’s ‘how to make the perfect…’ column in the Gruniad. She is always my first port of call when I fancy trying something new.

    She takes recipes from an assortment of cookbooks, tries them all, discusses what worked well and what didn’t (and why) for her and her test eaters before finishing with a recipe based on the outcome of those test cooks.

    One of the rare cases where you want to read the whole post and not just ‘jump to recipe’. Because she describes the variations that different cookbooks recommend, it’s very easy to adapt her own ‘perfect’ recipe to your own tastes.

    Here, as an example, is her chicken souvlaki.

  • There was no abuse or violence or aggression or anything like that, so I guess I got off lightly compared to some other commenters.

    But there was also little to no displays of love or affection. We kind of just cohabited. I don’t remember my parents ever telling me they loved me. I don’t remember either of them ever hugging me.

    That’s left me as something of an emotional cripple. More than one of my exes has used that exact term to describe me: ‘emotional cripple’.

    But now I have a wife (who saw enough of my family to understand what made me the way I am) who’s powered through all of that. And kids. Kids who I show my love to (not like that you filthy minded perverts). I tell them I love them and hug them and will probably fuck them up a whole different way.

  • Three main things from my personal experience.

    1. Sleep is shit. I remember when I was a teen or in my early 20s. I could sleep like a baby for 10 hours straight and wake up like tigger, raring to to, full of vim and vigour. Now I sleep in half hour bites. Each time I wake, I have to change position because some bit or other feels like it's going to sleep (the irony!) or just hurts. At least once in the night I need to pee. My dreams, at this point, inevitably become some variation of me looking for a toilet and they're always dirty or broken or something is wrong with them. I wake feeling tired, even if I get 10 hours in bed.
    2. Chronic arthritis. I'm not that old (late 50s) but my hips are utterly fucked. I can't walk for more than a couple of miles before the pain starts. I can't have steroids because (apparently) my hips might just fall apart. I can't have hip replacement surgery (Fuck! That's something old people have done!) because the arthritis isn't currently sufficiently debilitating.
    3. People no longer notice you. When I was younger I was a good looking guy. I had girlfriends who made everyone's head turn. Women fancied me, men were envious of me. Now, I'm just some old guy. It's pretty fucking rare that anyone gives me a second glance. I'm just some old guy.
