  • The bee doesn't have to know anything about numbers to make the honeycomb. All it needs to know is how big to make the circle (bee-sized) and where the circle should be (touching two other circles). From there, the hexagons form naturally.

  • It won't be as simple as that and the engineers who work on these systems can only think in terms of LLM and text classification, so they'd run your message through a classifier and end the conversation if it returns a "goodbye or thanks" score above 0.8, saving exactly 0 compute power.

  • febr//uary skips the second box, so I think they aimed to have an equal number of options in each column.

  • How do we know it's gay though? OP could be a girl (male)

  • If there's a clear pattern, regex is your friend. I use it for complex find-and-replace actions, or to generate code based on a template and a list of values (find a value, replace it with the template including the value). Full control over the output, more reliable even than manual copy-pasting.

  • Isn't that Bugs' sister from Albania?

  • If you liked every one of those shows, I can guarantee you that you'll like the rest of B99. Early seasons focus a lot on Jake, Holt and Amy, but later seasons get more variety in leads and storylines. There's a bunch of very good recurring concepts too, comparable to the Community paintball episodes. The series only gets stronger as it progresses imo.

  • What's the situation with grocery stores in NYC that the mayor has to promise city owned grocery stores?

  • A society where no one has capital and the only way to get ahead is to provide more labour? And you call them steamed hams despite the fact they're obviously grilled?

  • Why do you keep Gemini installed? Does it even work offline?

  • Plenty of people voted for Hillary Clinton, despite her being Hillary Clinton. I don't think her being a woman was the issue there.

  • It's not racist to say that a theocracy scares a lot of smart people away. I know multiple Iranian families who all fled Iran after 1979 and came to Europe. All highly educated, all very opposed to the Islamic Republic that ruined their country.

Here, the effect is notable enough to have its own Wiki article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_capital_flight_from_Iran

  • The more obvious choice would be to make everyone go dark, instead of setting up nationwide voice mail to pretend everyone is alive. But maybe this way they can keep everyone's communications open while also fooling most of these intelligence gathering methods (someone answered, in the right language, mark it as active).

  • How strong is that spider that it can lift a turtle? Will one nuke be enough?

  • I don't understand why you'd ever need to know this. What is a phylum anyway? Which animals share a phylum? Are bonobos and chimpanzees in a phylum, a family, a class? And what does that tell us about their relation that we couldn't already tell from their characteristics?

  • Thought I was looking at

  • I think if you look at child development research, you'll see that kids can learn to do crazy shit with very little input, waaay less than you'd need to train a neural net to do the same. So either kids are the luckiest neural nets and always make the correct adjustment after failing, or they have some innate knowledge that isn't pattern-based at all.

There's even some examples in linguistics specifically, where children tend towards certain grammar rules despite all evidence in their language pointing to another rule. Pure pattern-matching would find the real-world rule without first modelling a different (universally common) rule.

  • How do prescriptions for glasses even work on your side of the pond? I assumed it was just jargon of a sort, because round these parts I just go to a glasses seller and ask him for his strongest glasses. Then he says "no traveller, my strongest glasses are too strong for you, you can't handle my strongest glasses" and does the eye test with me before making lenses at the proper strength.

  • The strongest urinators are cicadas, but there's other animals that score higher on the Jet Shape? I guess ~100 Jet Shape must be peak then and everything higher than that is actually a weaker form of urination.

Edit: the labeled dot is only one of many cicadas and some of them score as low as 1.
