  • I'm about to set up forgejo again because I need to mirror some git repos and run custom actions on them to build arm64 images automatically when new releases come out.

    Would that be possible out of the box with radicle? I get that thats not the main focus, but the project seems interesting and I'd give it a shot if it can do what I need.

    Also I had some trouble with the wireguard tunnel dropping lots of packets, which resulted in my services not loading 50% of the time. I did a lot of suggestions at the same time so I'm not sure which one fixed it but here is a list in case anybody has similar troubles:

    • lowering MTU
    • routing ipv6 through the tunnel as well
    • rewriting nftables rule order
    • ...

  • Didn't work for me, it would cancel the hibernation saying there is not enough space in swap. I followed the setup instructions on arch wiki.

    Do you have a guide for that?

  • No not really.

    It's how long it takes to read 32GB from my swap. 170 MB/s continuous read speed ≈ 188 sec (3 min 8 sec) add the normal boot time to it (bios, grub, kernel initramfs) and you get the 4 minutes.

    When the system boots cold it doesn't have to read 32GB, just 0.5-2GB maybe.

    I never managed to make linux boot faster than windows (on the same device ofc).

    And to this day I don't understand why.

    Out of the 3 desktop OSes (lin, win, mac) linux was always the slowest one in my experience.

  • For my two systems (pc and laptop)with 32GB RAM each it takes ~4 minutes to boot from hibernation.

    Which is expexted afaik.

    Thats the opposite of "instant".

    Yeah thwre are a lot of better options for lots more money. But I don't have that kind of money.

    I need lots of RAM for as cheaply as possible while also being low-ish on the power cpnsumption. There is for example old server hardware on ebay that has 64GB or more RAM but draws like 300W idle. And it's not even that much cheaper to buy. Like I said for me, a 40W difference is about 100$ per year, so anything lower power than my current server will eventually pay for itself.

    I would have gone with amd or intel or whatever, but I didn't find anything in that price range.

  • I tried selfhosting a game server and it was laggy as hell on 8GB RAM. Then I ran it on my laptop that has 32GB and it ran fine and all friends were able to play. Was consuming aboyt 25GB (but still may run with less)

    But I'm not gonna run my laptop as a server because it is fully glued and I can't take out the battery without destroying it.

    Another tool I looked into requires at least 16GB RAM.

    So maybe for your usecase it's fine. But for me, I can't do half the stuff I want cause my cluster server has low RAM nodes. Even though it has 32GB in total (4x8)

    https://safing.io/ has a whole open source firewall and traffic monitoring gui app and their VPN (SPN) is a small and optional paid feature of that.

  • in my experience brand filament was less hassle to print with.

    I bought cheapo noname filament a couple of times from different manufacturers and it was very hit and miss.

    Worst case was I fiddled with printer settings for 6hours, drying it multiple times and many failed prints. Then I put in bambu filament and it printed perfectly with default settings.

    But best case was just as good as the expensive stuff.

    So you have to know yourself how much the gamble is worth it to you, what your frustration tolerance is etc.
