  • John Bolton is a staunch imperialist who should've been in jail for his role in bush era war crimes and corruption. He collaborated with the first trump regime then had the gall to complain that their actions may not have been entirely above-board.

    If he ends up in jail for running afoul of his ideological proteges it would be as close to poetic justice as we get under fascism.

  • A public awareness campaign to teach people about sophisticated technical tools would be incredibly expensive for limited effect. Awareness will rarely atop a sad person from engaging with a dopamine source.

    Addressing the issues at their source will always be much much cheaper and more effective.

  • A lot of comments here focus on denigrating the users but that's like making fun of people for dying of flu. Many immune systems at many times can fight off the effects of flu. But even though flu doesn't want you dead, death is a small risk for everyone and a larger risk for certain populations.

    GPT (4 especially) is a system that will cause these effects in a certain percentage of people. It's similar enough to actual human interaction to produce the same hormonal responses for some people at some times.

    Instead of inspiring scorn for the afflicted, these stories should prompt much tighter regulations and penalties for the companies that produce these toxic effects.

  • According to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the plan would see the US disbursing approved CHIPS Act grants only after acquiring non-voting shares of Intel and likely other chipmakers. That would allow the US to profit off its investment in chipmakers, Lutnick suggested, and Sanders told Reuters that he agreed American taxpayers could benefit from the potential deals.

    "If microchip companies make a profit from the generous grants they receive from the federal government, the taxpayers of America have a right to a reasonable return on that investment," Sanders said.

    The plan is that instead of just giving Intel the public's money with no strings, the public would get something in return. I have to admit that doesn't sound awful to me.

  • It's extra funny that "bear bear bear" would be considered the beariest bear, because "bear" doesn't even mean bear.

    Many languages had a taboo against saying the word bear - "bear" comes from the word for "brown", because people used to say "the brown one" instead. Some languages seem to have used "sweetpaw" or something similar.

    This is akin to the modern toilet-taboo, where except for terms like "shitter/pisser" all the words are euphemisms. Even "toilet" comes from towel.
