  • I buy the 2lb bags of golden curry flakes for struggle meals. They usually look something like this

    1. Set a kettle to boil (bonus for electric kettle)
    2. Start a cup of rice (I use a rice cooker, I don't think it would count as a struggle meal without)
    3. In a bowl, mix curry flakes with boiling water in ~1:3 curry to water ratio. Stir till smooth. Bonus: make a tea or coffee or whatever hot drink floats your boat as well
    4. (Optional) reheat some frozen veggies or leftovers or whatever
    5. Dump your rice and optionally veggies/leftovers into your bowl of curry sauce, mix, eat.

  • If you're handy with a soldering iron and know how to read a JTAG port, every chip on the pcb could be lifted and repurposed. Afaik a lot of them use miniature solar panels as power sources, which is absolutely repurposeable if you're comfortable crimping cables. This piece too far from my area of expertise to do more than just speculate on, but I have to assume they have optical components that could be repurposed by somebody with the right skillset too

IME the average low info conservative voter blindly trusts their favorite propagandists, so I think it's very meaningful and good when those propagandists try to jump off the sinking ship. Not in the sense that I suddenly trust them or think they're good people, but I'm also not so high on my own moral purity that I'm going to reject it or pretend it doesn't benefit me and my worldview.

  • I'd definitely avoid using the gov email address. This may be another difference between my field and what you are doing, but if a .gov emailed me asking for my work I'd redirect them to my security manager, expecting it to be one of those "oops you got phished, be more careful!" type of cyber training emails. I'd also offer that you might look up the person you're emailing; I've published under at least 2 different student email addresses that I no longer have access to. If you happen to know my name you'll find my current contact info pretty quickly on google, but if you email gust@undergrad.edu that email is going straight into the void

  • Very true. I've benefited from doing that countless times, and I keep final drafts of all of my work in folders organized by publisher title explicitly so that I can pass it forward if anybody ever emails me looking for something ive written that is now behind a paywall

    (I deleted my last comment because it ended up more vitriolic than I want on the internet forever, but for anybody reading this afterwards the gist of my deleted comment earlier in the thread was "I do not respect academic publishers")

  • Meh. My general opinion on academic publishers is such that I'd rather pirate it to avoid giving them the page view anyway. Entities that exist to gate knowledge can universally go fuck themselves

    Edit: generally, you can find a ton of hard to get papers by searching the first 5 or 6 words of the title plus "pdf" , "reasearchgate", or "arxiv" at the end of the search string
