  • I thought I'd try 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die (I'm using https://1001albumsgenerator.com/ ), but it's been a bit disappointing really - I'm nearly 800 in and only found 1 new artist to add to my collection. I guess I'm just old and set in my ways.

  • Lisp is a cool language. It was many years ago now, but I recall writing a lisp interpreter in lisp for a college project. It was only ~100 lines of code and my recollection is that it worked remarkably well.

  • I can't elaborate - it was a while ago. I think I did try the AIO and the consensus here then was that the AIO isn't necessarily the best way to go. That's why I'm asking before I try again - to see if there is any consensus. Apparently not.

  • I did try the AIO, or maybe read the docs and decided not to. Either way - it did not present as painless. Maybe your decade+ experience makes it hard to imagine what it's like for someone coming to it fresh?

  • I think there are some hobbies which can both > bring joy to one's life and not cause any harm

    I was thinking more of the other stuff we put in our bodies - processed food, the polluted air in most cities etc.

  • I enjoy good beer. I have one almost every day - I don't believe it's the effect alcohol has on my brain, but the taste. I found a non-alcoholic beer that I liked and drank it for months. Then the store ran out so I got some of my old favourites as a treat and from the very first sip it was just - better. So I'm back to drinking alcohol - one beer a day and a small Jägermeister once or twice a month.

    I understand that it's poison, but I feel like unless you're living a totally subsistence lifestyle in the middle of nowhere then everything you do is a potential poison to some extent and our bodies will deal with it or not - we're all playing Russian Roulette with everything we ingest, breath and touch.

  • You Don't Love systemd Timers Enough

  • This is one of the things that frustrate me about Debian based systems. I know most distributions ship with lots of different tools to do the same job and you pick the one you like. But with something as fundamental as system timers it just feels wrong to me - when I want to change the timing of something I first need to figure out is the cron job real, or just a stub referring to the systemd timer, or visa versa.

    So for a while I had removed cron from all my systems and fully committed to timers. Now I've decided I don't like systemd and gone fully the other way.

    I know it's not that bad, but that's the way my brain works - and I can remember getting really screwed up with some early Ubuntu systems.

  • Everything should be edible except things that obviously are not - mussel shells for example. I feel the tomato vines fall into this category (but accept that it's arguable). That shallot is 100% edible.

  • This is perfectly logical and I agree. Except that this controversy has prompted me to go learn about Lennart Poettering. I've been using systemd forever and I like it - I like journald and remote journald, I like networkd, I even deleted cron off my systems and use systemd timers exclusively. I knew there was some controversy about Lennart, but I didn't really care. Now that I've read a bit about his background and, maybe more importantly, his new company - I don't have a good feeling for the future of systemd.

  • I'm thinking the same. I understand the people saying it's no big deal, it's just an optional field. But the existing optional fields (GECOS) have been there since the beginning of time. The original Unix user database (/etc/passwd) was created in a different time. Things have changed in the last 50 years and we now know that a simple field in an OS level database is not really an appropriate place to store PII. I don't know what the solution is, as these laws are coming and there will be some people that need to comply, but I don't think the current change to systemd is the right approach.

    On the plus side - this controversy has prompted me to look into other options for my home servers and I'm loving the minimalism and simplicity of Alpine. (This isn't a knee jerk reaction - I've been frustrated by the bloated feel of mainstream distributions for a while - more the straw that may break the camel's back)

  • I already run Debian on my desktop and 3 other small servers. I just haven't moved over my main one yet because of the complexity, and procrastination.

  • My main home server runs Ubuntu - I installed it 15-20 years ago and it's grown into a monster. I've been slowly documenting everything so I can reinstall with Debian. Have to up the priority of that project.

  • I've got a Sony and even it's showing home screen ads - normally it's just "suggestions" for shows on streaming services I don't have, but the occasional car ad also comes through. I have a theory that the reason Sony are getting out of the TV business is that they don't want to develop their own TV OS and they're sick of their customers complaining about the ads in Google's OS.

    I'm about to get a 2nd one and I'm seriously considering a computer monitor hooked up to a mini PC running XBMC or something.
