  • If there are two parties, and one says it's raining, and the other says it isn't, it's not the news media's job to give an unbiased report on the debate, it's their job to look out the fucking window and say whether or not it's raining.

  • Probably The Asylum.

Admittedly, The Asylum has a quite a few rooms within it, but I'd say that the antechamber of The Asylum that abuts the outer wall to Outside comprises the majority of the surface of the Earth and its atmosphere, so that's a pretty big room.

  • I have a theory about this!

It falls under the umbrella of why transhumanism (or transklingonism, or whatever you like... transbeingism?) is so rare in Star Trek. None of the major powers have fully embraced cybernetic or genetic augmentation. Why?

Earth has the Eugenics Wars which is used to explain how leery they are of genetic augmentation, and it could also explain their conservative attitude towards cybernetics. The encounter with the Borg would just reinforce this pre-existing attitude. But the Klingons, the Romulans, the Cardassians? Why haven't any of them fully embraced either genetic or mechanical augmentation?

The theory is that, in the Star Trek universe, "natural" evolution is the only stable way for species to advance. The augments led to the Eugenics Wars, and you've also got the Bynars who went full cybernetic and nearly had their civilization collapse due to one bad solar flare. The changelings, the Douwd, and the Q, on the other hand, seem to have evolved to their extraordinary powers taking the long route. The Borg are the ultimate example of the dangers of advancing too quickly; they became a cancer species so aggressive that every other sentient species cannot help but ally against them and seek their destruction.

If augmentation were a viable means of advancement in Star Trek you would expect to see more examples of it in the galactic community, but you don't, so there must be a very good reason why it isn't.

  • Did you see what he did to Dr. Dugong?!

  • That transparency has lots of uses!

  • Instructions unclear. Got God diagnosed with lead poisoning

Well, that certainly explains the platypus!

  • This is literally the backstory of Blue Submarine No. 6

  • Looks like one of those mechanical cancer SCPs.

  • At one point when I was in my mid to late-twenties, my workplace's neighbor had their sprinkler system fail and flood their business. It was so bad that a bunch of water seeped under the adjoining wall and we had about a half an inch of water across a third of our fairly large store. There were maybe a dozen or so of us working there at the time, and we all got called in to rapidly move merchandise out into a big truck so that it wouldn't get spoiled by the damp air before the remediation guys could do their thing.

So there's all of these people, most of them younger than me, but not by a lot, running back and forth with crates of merchandise, and I looked around and immediately saw how chaotic and inefficient it was.

So I said, "Okay, you stand by the truck. You stand by the front door, you stand just inside. You stand a little further in than that. The first person just picks up a crate, and we bucket brigade it all out to the truck."

It was an obvious solution, and it made the work go by so much faster and easier, but apparently I was the only one who thought to do it. I realized that in that moment, in a moderately large group, I was the most responsible adult in the room.

And I'm pretty sure that was when my childhood ended.

  • Oh, I've got fucking Cold urticaria. My body takes it personally if I go swimming in cold water, or don't wear a heavy sweatshirt on a chilly day, or God forbid if my sheets are just a little bit cold and I'm not wearing wrist-to-ankle pajamas. It fucking sucks, and it didn't even develop until I was in my thirties, so it's not as if this something that I learned to live with so early that it's second nature to me now. FUCK my fucking cold-activated histamines.

  • Treat your taste kindly with KENT, the cigarette with the NEW Micronite filter!

    ^^Micronite ^^is ^^asbestos.

  • I shit you not, I once watched a lady talking to the information desk at an art museum about a membership with a toddler. The kid started getting antsy, and didn't listen after she told them to stop trying to run away. She had the kid lay down on their stomach, and she very gently put her foot on the kid's back, so she was in effect halfway standing on them. The kid didn't even seem upset, just "This is what happens when I don't listen." Awe inspiring.

  • Yeah, not getting what they want might mess up a kid's afternoon. Being taught that throwing tantrums can get them what they want might mess a kid up for their entire life.

  • Nothing should! Parenting is hard fucking work, and if you're not one hundred percent up for it, then don't do it!

Even in some fantasy ideal world where pregnancy and childbirth are easy, preschool is free, and the future isn't somewhere between bleak and horrifying... being a parent is still an incredibly taxing ordeal, mentally, physically, and emotionally. There are plenty of kids in the world. Nobody should get born to parents that feel even the slightest bit of reluctance at their existence.

  • Florida 2000 Presidential Election results:

    • Bush: 2,912,790 (48.847%)
    • Gore: 2,912,253 (48.838%)
    • Nader: 97,488 (1.64%)

If just 538 Nader voters had gone to Gore, representing 0.0091% of the total vote, Al Gore would have been president.

Tiny fucking margins can change the world. Ask a bunch of dead Iraqi people if they feel like there would have been no meaningful difference between Bush and Gore.
