  • Hoggle is my example of why most CGI characters in live-action movies are unnecessary. Hoggle is an incredible feat of puppetry combined with the performance of the actor inside the suit, and if that can be accomplished in 1986, then don't tell me that a practical character can't be done today.

L3-37 from Solo is a great example of how to merge practical with CGI. You get the actors real performance, the human actors on set get something real to interact with, and then CGI can fill in some of the gaps and do the things that physically can't be done in reality.

  • I got her autograph at Dragon Con and she said that they paid her garbage for that gig, but that she loved hanging out with David Bowie.

  • I could believe that little tetrahedron symbol on his polo is some cryptofascist bullshit symbol that he had embroidered on at a mall kiosk because he's too chickenshit to actually own his bigotry and wear a Hakenkreuz...

...but I could also believe that there's some athleisure company out there with that logo where when that photo went viral saw it suddenly appear everywhere and just went Fffffuuuuuucckk mmmmeeeeeee..."

  • Good thing the Law of Unintended Consequences isn't a thing!

  • Image search duck penis. You will not regret image searching duck penis today.

  • The movie Primer has a very limited time machine that works at -2X. You turn the machine on at, for instance, 2PM, and walk away, coming back in, say, eight hours. You then go into the machine, and you stay in there for eight hours. When you come out of the machine, it is now 2PM, the time when you first turned the machine on. It is a one-way machine; you can only ever use it to go backwards, and you have to go forwards in time the old-fashioned way.

It was made on a budget of $7000 and it's one of the best sci-fi movies ever made.

  • "Not voting sends a message."

    Yeah, it fuckin' does.

  • Both of my grandfathers were horrible, and then largely absent. When each of them died, I managed a shrug and a mild bit of interest in learning more about them from their obituaries than they had ever shared with me over my entire life. My parents both show signs of generational trauma. They did their best with me, and I give them each passing grades, somewhat elevated by the fact that they got divorced when I don't remember, rather than sticking it out in a malfunctional marriage and no doubt allowing me to get caught in the crossfire. Even for all of that, I recognize in myself some of the echoes of what was done to them. I've done therapy and I've resolved to make sure my kid knows that, even if we sometimes argue or have to tell her things she doesn't want to hear, that no matter what we'll always love and cherish her.

Try to live your life in such a way that, when you die, the people you leave behind can manage more of an emotional reaction than a shrug and moving on with their day.

  • I've seen parents pushing toddlers around strapped into a stroller with a tablet mounted on an arm right at the kid's eye level. Even if the kid wanted to stop looking at the tablet, they'd have a hard time. They're basically Ludovico Technique-ing their own kids.

  • Spring:

  • My understanding is that it's more like sucking a dick than like getting your dick sucked.

  • The grapefruit reference is accurate. I'd describe it as floor varnish thinner mixed with hyper-concentrated grapefruit rind. The interesting thing is the way it doesn't actually smell that bad, but then it starts terrible and gets worse after a few seconds. I'm convinced there's some interesting chemistry going on in there where it degrades into other chemicals as it oxidizes in your mouth.

The only remotely comparable flavor I've ever had is...

...Unicum, which tastes like a cedar chest smells, and I was more than a little afraid would make me go blind.

0/10 for both, would absolutely recommend if you want someone to establish a baseline for "absolute worst-tasting thing ever deliberately consumed that is technically meant to be consumed."

  • I love that there's both Assaj Ventress and Savage Oppress.

If I had a nickel for every time there was a Star Wars character with a name that rhymed with Corsage Prom Dress, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it's happened twice.

A: Because the P is silent.

  • I listened to an NPR story around Halloween about a young married couple in the early 1900s who moved into an old house.

Right away, the place is clearly haunted. Weird cold spots. Doors that are open that they know they had closed earlier. They hear footsteps sometimes in rooms they know are empty. They awake at night and are aware of malevolent human-shaped dark figures in their bedroom. It's basically a laundry list of classic haunted house tropes.

They call in a priest, he says some prayers. Weird phenomena continue. House is still haunted.

They call in a gas guy. He fixes a leaky gas pipe. Symptoms go away. House is no longer haunted.
