  • IMHO, if you have that many enterprise clients, you can’t just nuke product support without a press release that explains the rationale. It’s safer to explain the reasoning and as the last few sentences indicated, help them transition to a new IDE that works with your product.

  • I think anyone running Open AI would make that call.

    Anyone in that role would be worried about Musk using end users as a way to acquire model distillation data to feed Grok with GTP.

    Musk is a direct competitor, has been feuding with Open AI for years, and he has shown that he’s totally ok with acquiring data in aggressively shady ways.

  • This is the stuff worth ignoring. He can call it Lake Freedom Fries, Lake America, Lake Trump, or whatever. That doesn’t mean Canada or New York will change the signage of the area. It’ll be another dumb Google Maps change that will vanish after this guy finally leaves office.

  • Depends on the topic.

    Since traffic is low, most eyeballs come from feeds like /all, and that can be good for some niche communities and bad for others.

    For example, I’ve seen certain software / hardware user group communities really struggle. Weird example - if people try to start user groups or developer communities for Microsoft or Apple products, their questions and or news posts can get downvoted and shredded with unconstructive comments. Basically, all of those communities get their new posts screened by a bunch of OSS evangelist, because that’s most of us here. Those posts get murdered in the crib.

  • Speaking for Lemmy, I feel like political and meme communities are alive and well, but smaller specialized niche communities still haven’t been able to get a foothold.

    The collective user base is pretty small, so only the broader interest communities get engagement and or survive c/all.

  • Aside from Bluesky, is there anything that actually has a big community of active users? What’s worth checking out? Every project I pop into still feels early and has pretty low engagement.

  • And IT staff is often a lot of young folks who are building their resume and make really dumb rookie decisions. I was once that rookie.

  • Agreed. Although sometimes these smaller affiliates don’t have super-seasoned IT talent. The jobs for the department heads at these organizations often make what an intern or college grad would make in the private sector at an unremarkable mid-size tech company.

    You often get people making questionable decisions simply because they don’t have seasoned IT people in the building.

    All in all, this was dumb, but it also feels like a story I’ve seen before. The nonprofit media isn’t funded, and the cracks are showing.

  • This looks like this is isolated to KETC’s locally produced shows for Missouri. They appear to be a smaller affiliate and they don’t make a ton of stuff that contributes to national and international broadcasts.

    Since they have a smaller audience I imagine it’s going to be harder for KETC to find community-created backups of their stuff.

    I also imagine that if Missouri gave more of a shit about public broadcasting, this affiliate would be operating with better funded / more experienced IT staff. These little affiliates really rely on a lot of volunteers and green IT folks who do the work for the experience.

  • Does the local St. Louis affiliate produce anything that lots of people would want to seed? They look like a smaller affiliate compared to the WGBH and WNETs out there.

    I imagine KETC is a really small shop that mostly broadcasts stuff others have made, plus hyper-local content that isn’t expensive to make.
