  • This is such a fun conversation. I'm a priest in the Episcopal Church and our denomination has been talking about this for many years now. One of my colleagues made a great counter to the whole "male and female" thing by noting that God also created light and dark and day and night and there's a whole range of things that exist between those two dichotomies.

    Also, there's numerous trans readings regarding Jesus within the Bible itself! For instance, Saint Paul notes that Jesus "is the Wisdom of God." Paul is drawing from the wisdom tradition, which depicts God's wisdom as a woman. Further, Saint John's gospel clearly draws from the book known as the Wisdom of Solomon (from the Apocrypha) for his preface, held by many Christians to be the most explicit biblical statement on Jesus' divinity. Later, saints like Julian of Norwich and Anselm of Canterbury would write of Jesus being our Mother. So there's a rich tradition which recognizes Jesus, a He/Him male, embodying long established and celebrated feminine aspects of God (it's for this reason that I don't usually go for swapping the gender of the Father or referring to the Holy Spirit as "She" because I feel like it winds up masking the more clear, and challenging, divine feminine things about Jesus found in the Bible itself). There's definite trans/gender-queer things going on in these texts!

  • Iʻve been buying Knockaround glasses for years. Theyʻre not owned by Essilor-Luxottica and have pretty great quality that has improved over the years. Only reason Iʻve had to buy new glasses from them was either due to theft or loss.

  • If Paramount were smart, they'd do something like this. Disney+ has all kinds of "screen saver" ASMR-adjacent things. Paramount could easily whip up an hour-long slow pan of generic crew life on the Enterprise. I mean, I've put on the 10 hours of nacelle white noise you can find on YouTube.

  • I think this is how the "currency" of knowledge and experience works in Star Trek. The more senior position you have, the more away missions you get to take, which is part of the incentive to be promoted. Since there's no money, experience becomes currency (in a sense) so having the privilege of away missions and all of that is like getting a raise. We see this in the various shows (SNW in particular) where being picked for away missions is a kind of desired reward.

    Plus, it also fosters more captain openings in a society where people can just keep going well into their 100s. It's how Kirk got to become captain of the Farragut, yeah? His captain died on an away mission?

  • I once rescued a kitten I found running around outside of my place. Riddled with parasites, easily days away from death. Solid black, adorable and loving. Got her all healed up and then I named her Le Muerte por Fuego (the Death by Fire). Until she had kittens and then she just became "Mama Cat."

  • This. I served as the Opinion Editor of my college newspaper. I hung around students who saw themselves as "real" journalists and they saw it as their duty to annoy the living hell out of administrators and others, often in defiance of the faculty representative in the paper office. I knew guys who would just walk into board meetings uninvited. They'd corner the university president. They'd go to meetings and ask questions that the administrators clearly did not want to answer and then push on them to give an answer. Freedom of the Press is not something that is comfortable. It will have push-back, the laws designed to protect it have to be activated from time-to-time. What's been the most successful tool of curtailing the "Fourth Estate" in modern politics is not silencing so much as fostering a space where the press never use their freedoms.

  • Setting the story on a station allowed the "trekking" to be more psychological and philosophical. Has trekking the stars changed us as much as we'd like to imagine? We're more open-minded as a result, but where are the limits of tolerance? Where are there still blind-spots? An excellent inversion of the Star Trek formula that builds out the whole "Western, but set-in-space" by playing off of something like Gunsmoke more than Wagon Train or whatever.

    Just think, due to budget distribution, we got "Family" right after "Best of Both Worlds, pt. 2" and it's among the best Picard-centric episodes (and provided thematic ground for Generations, First Contact, and Picard--for good and not-so-good)!
