ACAB, Anti-War, and I hate Democrats, Republicans, and billionaires. (Yes, even your favorite billionaire: the pop star, the philanthropost, the legendary athlete, or the soft-spoken investment guru who cosplays as middle class.) With each passing day I get a little closer to hating everyone.

Also, I refuse to use Donald's last name out of hatred for the man and his brand, FYI.

    I spent my 20's and early 30's trudging in a job where I was mistreated, vastly underpaid and struggling. I also have mental health problems and visual impairment that persist to this day, so I'm exceedingly fortunate that I was able to find a better path in life.

    I landed a better job in my late 30's and in the years since I've paid off my car, my student loans, bought a condo, and saved a fair amount of money.

    Being poor for so long taught me to live cheaply, which I still do even though I could spend more if I wanted to.

    The major turning point was March 2020. When some oil stocks dropped below a dollar in value I took every spare dollar I had, bought shares between 30 and 75 cents, and then a few years later sold them for $12 a share. That paid off my student loans and funded the down payment on my home.

    But even when I was poor I never didn't save. It was better to be eating mac-and-cheese and have money in the bank if I needed it than to be surrounded by the latest stuff and have nothing to fall back on.

  • Oh yeah.

    It's become prohibitively expensive, so I only have it occasionally. My parents made the unfortunate choice to raise me on McDonald's, so unfortunately, I happen to like it a fair bit. For me it's just a treat, or if I mess up cooking my dinner I might order some to replace that, but it's pretty rare as I can cook up some delicious chicken and veggies, or if I really want fries/tots, pop some in the air fryer, and it's infinitely cheaper and just as good as ordering fast food. (And healthier.)

    Then there's the calories. That alone is enough reason for me to only have it occasionally.

  • I thought that my first couple of days, but TBH, I actually really like that Fedi social media is completely self-directed. Not having the Jack Dorseys, Donald Trumps, and Zuckerbergs of the world vomiting content or stupid ads onto my feed is well worth the modicum of extra effort.

    I found half of the people I'm following just by posting a picture of my dog and tagging it #CuteAnimals, and that got a nice response. I do follow a few hashtags and found follows there, but I will probably take them off once I'm up to 30-40 follows and I like my feed.

  • Of course. Those cuts are, largely, going to fall on welfare and welfare recipients, because they're not cutting entitlements and they're not cutting the military.

    It's the impoverished southern states that utilize welfare the most. (And they never thank California or New York.)

    Always fun to run into someone who legit isn't aware that other countries regulate speech and function well regardless, and even gasp have protest movements.

    Then again, the US' whole brand is doing things differently than the rest of the world for shitty reasons.

  • That's not 100% true. One can make educated guesses based historical patterns. Here are a couple of examples.

    For instance, in 2008 when the markets crashed, the travel industry crashed harder and oil stocks tanked. The same happened in 2020 and the oil stock I bought at a 90% discount paid off my student loans a few years ago after the rebound. (Thanks, Permian Resources.)

    Another, you can follow the portfolio of a federal legislator like Nancy Pelosi or Ted Cruz, because for them, insider trading is legal and they profit handsomely from it, and when given the opportunity to make it illegal Congress always votes it down.

    You're right that things can never be 100% predicted, but we can make educated choices based on historical info, yes. This is why every mutual fund page you look at gives you the name and tenure of the fund manager.
