I could barely watch it because there is nothing in that movie that makes sense, yet is referenced as if it does.
Well... the nebulous idea of society decaying on its current trajectory is true, i think we'll all agree (good thing we have time to course correct). As with most movies, the nebulous idea/the combined set of ideas presented is/are the most important consideration to viewers in general.
If we're getting down to technical specifics, there are some things that don't make sense, I'll concede:
If they don't use water for stuff, there are innumerable things that shouldn't work and everyone should have disease or st the very least be dying from some sort of malnutrition.
How has society not collapsed if people are that stupid? Who sustains the vast agricultural systems and the water infrastructure that now supplies soda to everyone?
The soda corporation is taking over america. For such devious plans, someone running the corporation must be smart. Why don't they just fix everything? Or does President Terry Crews just execute anyone who proposes good ideas?
All the judges being intellectually disabled doesn't actually make sense, assuming they still maintain testing/career performance standards. Also makes it seem like all the intellectually disabled citizens gravitate towards that job. Also, isn't everyone intellectually disabled in the movie? So when they say "all the judges are r-words" they're actually saying they're straight-up insane.
this one is probably just a middle finger to modern day judges though. Lol.
What about the rest of the world? (Outside of the scope of the movie tbf, but come on... the whole world is that stupid? Or just America? I know which one is my headcanon)
I love the powertrip element of the movie, great to watch when you fedl bad about yourself. "Yeah I just need to freeze myself and wake up in the future so i can be the smartest person on Earth." But then i guess the moral is that you just need to apply yourself - protagonist, being perfectly average, was letting himself down by getting comfortable in that mediocrity.
Ah, commonn sci fi trope i see. Also funny thst the wikipedia article there makes it sound like having no belly button would be as big a concern as amnesia itself
A show i watched as a kid was a Dr Who Spinoff called The Sarah Jane Adventures and a main character is a faux-human created by aliens in a lab, who therefore has no belly button. I've always thought that was really interesting and that it's unfair we can't have smooth, holeless abdomens too.
Hold on - this was a joke, wasn't it? i.e "some of us are (...) not overtly creepy" is a pun because it implies all pedos are creepy to some extent and the 'good ones' are the ones who manage to keep their creepiness hidden
that pacifism isn’t an effective way to bring social change. There are many counterexamples.
There may be examples of pacifism being effective at bringing change, but that does not mean it will always be effective at bringing change or will always be an adequate response to a situation. If you have ever been attacked randomly, you will know this. Sitting on the floor cross legged like gandhi does not make some random axeman stop trying to kill you.
I am one of them. Nobody has ever truly meant it when they say they're a pacifist. And to any so-called "pacifists" reading this -does that statement make you mad? Make you want to slap me? Oh dear.
The funny thing is, having been born several years after it was released and having probably played the lego games before seeing the films, I liked it! Hell I loved it!
But if i put myself in the shoes of, well, you for instance, then I can see that it's as dissapointing as the disney sequel trilogy. And then I can see how lame some aspects are on further rewatches
Phantom Menace was great for lore expansion of Star Wars, but it was weird to see it get more infantile than the previous trilogy, seeing as original fans were actually getting older.
It has really low rewatchability too. The in-universe gap between phantom menace and attack of the clones is reallly long, making it less relevant to the rest of the trilogy. And it has huge swathes of boring stuff in the middle. Politics stuff, very hard to follow.
Jar Jar doesn't bother me as a character.
I say this everytime phantom menace is mentioned, but the original plans would have had appropriately aged characters and been really fun.
Search Huw Richards on YouTube. He has a book as well. I guess it's suited to British climate so will work in new York and anything south of that.
Key take aways: cucumbers beans and peas are the easiest and fastest things to grow, if you haven't grown anything before.
Potatoes are viable and give a big harvest
I would recommend any root vegetables because, A) its satisfying, B) they're less susceptible to bug and slug attack. Carrots are super good for you.
Edit: if you have no garden space, just pots, beans cucumbers pease work well in that.
Potatoes are even viable in this method if you have a lot of surplus water (e.g from a clothes dryer or a dehumidifier or from washing up or cooking or tea drinking.)
Thank you for the nsfl warning, I will NOT be googling that. Interesting to read though.
