(He/Him) | 🇬🇧

I like city building games and puzzles. I like other things as well, but that's not important right now.

  • One thing I want to learn which seems important to me career wise is HEC-RAS, a hydrological River Analysis Software. I think it's free?

From this you can build your own predictions of when flooding (or drought!) will occur in your local area

  • People patently get pressured to leave the site if they don't align with certain politics, and religious views are routinely insulted, or people harassed for even implying warmness towards religious concepts.

An instance for religious people to gather and an instance for conservative/right wing people to gather would solve several problems:

    1. how do we maintain/draw in an audience from wider backgrounds?
    2. how to mitigate/reduce conflict and argumentstion on lemmy (unlike reddit we don't benefit from feuding), and
    3. if people want to censor their experience from such people, or vice versa, defederation or instance blocking exists.

I also agree that lemmy doesn't necessarily need to be bigger. But I would expect a lot of more traditional-views users to appear when they get sick of twitter, having probably been banned/driven from reddit already.

  • Maybe suggest a business consultant for her to assess how she can restructure the business to be less dependent on her labour

  • Think he wanted quizzes and articles. And reddit posts, for instance - testimony. It makes sense to me, because those 3 things are qualitative and anecdotal and thus provide more of a human interaction feel. What OP ultimately needed was to talk it over with people.

  • Give a man a break 🫠

  • I think you're in a unique type of hell here. The thing about small-medium sized business owners is that they can either tired themselves to the bone or not... it's ultimately a choice, and she would be so much healthier (mental and physical) if she took the choice to release her workload. Any good business needs failsafes; she needs someone under her to manage the hectic stuff. Once you're past startup phase you can't allow your business to halt on account of one key worker taking a sick day or being overworked. Your girlfriend is that key staff member in her business, she's made herself take all the burden. No more!

Anyway, would I personally date a workaholic? My first response was "Absolutely. I'd enjoy making it my job to help them take the edge off from work and relax again." However, what you present is soooooooo so so more extreme than my idea of a workaholic. So now I just feel embarrassed. Hope your partner can have a less hectic work life soon (in a positive sense. Begone, monkeys paw!)

  • is it just me or are people getting chained up by romantic partners even more than they did in the past

  • That means the universe owes you good weeks in the future

  • They're in love with you

  • I got a callback this monday from a application I did with a company that had no job openings. I just liked the company. They also liked me, aparently.

    That's amazing

I will probably never have this happen 🤣 making a portfolio is really confusing for me

  • Bah 😤

  • That's awesome. Setting out on a new business venture is so fun. Pretty niche business, too. Very cool 😎

  • I think i signed up to do a uni study where you get a free brain mri and they didn't invite me. So annoyed about that.

  • Yes. I've been wanting full MRI scans for abnormalities. You never know what you can learn about your body and, though you probably have nothing wrong with you, it helps to be more familiar with our own bodies.

My interpretation of the rules is that you can ask for advice or tips broadly applicable but not for tutorials in specific actions, e.g "how do i write a conveyance" or "how to do my maths homework?"

  • TL;DR: force yourself and be conscience that your brain is trying to trick you

I think you have to get used to the fact that many things get more boring over time but still need a human hand to guide them to completion, and you need to remember that it feels so much better to have a finished project rather than an unfinished one.

If you think about it, all things in the world are like this to some extent. Cooking a meal can be like that. Learning and practicing a song can be like that, or learning a language; it eventually feels like you're getting diminishing returns on any time spent studying it further.1

Going to the gym or on a hike can be like that. Or even playing videogames, or scrolling on a phone - which is why we eventually stop doing those tasks!

I believe that getting used to doing high dopamine tasks without a schedule, i.e we only end when it gets boring, trains us to see other tasks these ways - "it's boring now, let's call the project quits." Every time you see something through to completion you are training yoir brain to do better.

1okay actually learning a language is more of a "this is so fun, i'm learning the cokours and how to say hello!" To "this is such a slog... i can't even..." to then being anle to read books in the language and study it the same way you studied your native one in school; "how do we best formulate sentences, write academic reports, write poetry in this language?"

In this way, you see that the completion of one boring project enables you to start an even more fun one!

  • Ask Lemmy @lemmy.world

What good things have happened to you, or for you, over the last week?

  • I think people sell themselves short when it comes to hobbies too. Like think about what games, movies or even youtube videos you specifically enjoy engaging with. True Crime? First Person Shooters? Romantic fiction?

Take one of those, and then you can really guild it as a hobby by taking your interest across multiple mediums and talking about it with others. I was into city planning games and maps, and then i got into historical architecture and the history of towns, then started to actually explore this via photography, and it informed what i decided to study at university.

Therefore this one interest is tapped into via video games, research (reading + writing), photography, discussion with other people.

some people might not see or understand that as a valid hobby or interest, i don't really give a fuck because it literally is and I know how much it connects across multiple things that i do and how much effort can go into it. when i feel like it, lol.

    another example:

as for music, i just happened to have access to a piano in my childhood home and i was interested in seeing how good i could get without lessons - which leads to being made to take lessons, by your parents xD. I might have been lazy and left it there, i'm not as rigourous as other musicians, but because what i really enjoyed as a kid was videogames I got into trying to figure out some of that music by myself, and that reinvigorated my love of music and re-affirmed my own creative ability after the rigour of just learning from set pieces in books squashed it a little bit.

All music listed online tries to charge you money for looking at the sheet music so in order to better have access to new songs to play I started transcribing, and musescore made that easier. Now i can write my own stuff if i need to.

Photography and walking influenced one another and i got into them around the same time as covid so it was pretty easy, and then because i had access to walking it helped me get into fitness in other regards e.g running. (usually have to know where you're gonna run before you run)

See - hobbies work in loops. It's not about one thing you mind doing repetetively but something you'll carry across multiple areas of life. You probably already have your hobbies, question is what's the next step that relates to them? I would recommend getting into online discussions about your favourite shows. TVtropes is a good place to start

  • photography, video games, film review, writing, cooking + making preserves, reading, book reviews, walking, running, genealogy, listening to music, transcribing on musescore and playing music.

if that sounds like a lot bare in mind i tap into each one on an ad hoc basis rather than scheduling it out. the only ones i technically do regularly is walking, music and video games, like most people.

also going to art galleries + theatre 👍

  • I think an important distinction is he's CEO for the UK branch; Palantir is a USA company. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palantir

    • Peter Thiel
    • Stephen Cohen
    • Alex Karp
    • Joe Lonsdale
    • Nathan Gettings
