I encourage y'all to try plain peanut butter, just nuts and salt. Gonna be a slightly different experience, but the peanut intensity is just so much greater, and man its much healthier.

I've come to interpret a lot of these modern problems and solutions as questions of capital. To sound like a broken record, having as highly capitalist of an economic system as we do creates a lot of these incentives, so much so that I feel the question itself isn't necessarily a question of climate policy, but rather a question of our relationship between company and government. Partially because we have a cyclical system of: company lobbies for good law -> good law nets company more money -> repeat, but in the direction of environmental policy.
The EPA exists for a reason, the FDA exists for a reason, basically all three letter burecracies exist for a reason, It's to preserve something that is found to be important. Increasingly though, companies are exerting larger and larger power on government, and that's serving to pursue their interests, which in many cases means reductions or cuts to these agencies that can get in their way of profits.
Tl;Dr: I believe it takes advantage of tech-illiteracy.
My experience has been that McAfee pays for PC hardware manufacturers to include their service as an install with their drivers. This results in people seeing "Oh my new PC has McAfee antivirus," and it becomes their main antivirus by merit of always being in-your-face, then it eventually throws popups that say "Your antivirus is expiring, pay us!" To which if that's become your go-to, you'd likely pay without thinking much of it. Most people just aren't tech literate enough to take action on things. It always blows me away just how bad the common human's tech literacy is, like even 2FA services aren't understood by most people, heck most people dont even know how to uninstall a program on Windows.
Recently, I've really taken a liking to Chicken and Gnocchi soup, I go heavy on everything but broth. It's rather cheap, and while I'm not strapped for cash, just thinking "This meal only cost 75¢" is a wild thought when I see a Chipotle burrito going for $16.75. Biggest thing is that it's rather easy to make, and it could be fast, but I tend to take an hour per batch, and do so in bulk. I do have photos of the soup, but my lighting ain't quite the best, so I don't quite feel it's up to standards visually of a community like this.
So far my approach is:
one really big pot
One small bag of large shredded carrots
Half white onion
Simmer in 2tb oil until it starts softening.
Season: Black pepper, 3 cloves garlic, paprika, mustard powder, dash of allspice, and optionally cayanne.
Add 4 cups chicken broth
Add three chicks breasts, simmer until 165°F
remove, shred, and reinsert chicken
Add 1.5 cups heavy cream
Add 1-2tb corn starch
A whole ass carton of spinach.
Parmesan and season to taste.
Having this with some breadsticks or chunks torn off a loaf is optimal, but only if torn off like a caveman.
Honestly I'd say the ones who ruined it were the cryptobros who only care about seeing number go up. Gave a bad rep to crypto right outta the gate, especially with causing the (first) GPU shortage. Now if you mention crypto to anyone, even with a legitimate interest, they instantly get a bad taste in their mouth.
It is always nice when some service allows payment in Monero though. The default of bitcoin is still prominent, but thankfully most people are realizing it ain't private at all.
We do have some similar things, like Meshtastic for messages, but that's just texting via radio. As far as calls go, it's mostly also just radio for now.
Session tried to get a call and text system setup whereby anyone can host a node, similar to a TOR node, but their foundation didn't reach the funding total. The work is done, but some services are gonna be scaled back a bit. There is definitely a considerable push for systems like that, but they'll take a bit of time for implementation as it'd otherwise just be another company owned service that's outside our control.
Honestly, I would really fuck with a comprehensive Linux mobile experience. I know some things exist, but they aren't yet fully rounded off. I say this now, but know damn well I'd tinker with something I shouldn't and wind up needing to reinstall the OS like five times.
Word of caution on this, make dang sure you know exactly what you're doing. Dassault systems has a reputation for tracking pirates down and billing out the ass, and that reputation doesn't come from nowhere.
Still not saying not to pirate it, but do tread on very light waters.

Pretty sure that is it. A lotta people in response to seeing him decry certain technologies tend to say, "that uncompromising nature on privacy is why GrapheneOS holds up so well." Which I gotta be real when I say that it really does make me feel more comfortable with GrapheneOS' development. I can't keep up with all news on it, I'm not wanting to completely audit all the source code, but having a development team led by someone like that does bring a sense of ease toward my phone.
I was gonna say, you can tell who's just a cryptobro vs who actually cares about fiscal freedom based on that. If anyone suggests you use bitcoin, they probablyyyyy aren't someone to listen to. Zcash and Monero are the only two I'd ever trust as of now.
Honestly, its a massive shame that a technology as good as crypto was completely usurped by groups just looking to profit. They chant "This is true freedom of finance!" while only caring how much USD it's worth. Like dawg, that's why nobody takes crypto seriously.
For reference of just how easy this is, most AR-15s that I've seen have been units built from individual parts, my own included. That's kinda the AR-15's whole schtick, is that it's super modular and customizable, so much that a lotta people joke that it's "LEGOs for adults." It makes good sense, if company A makes a good upper, but Company B makes good triggers, so why not mix and match for the best of both worlds?
No shame if you're one of these people, but I figured mostly everyone on Lemmy would've known about this sorta stuff by now. While many apps are just frontends for services, the presence of an app alone is enough to massively expand trackability of the user. Heck, its profitable enough for companies to force people to use apps that some services are forcing all mobile website visits to redirect straight to an app store.
I know its a joke, but man I just bailed hay yesterday and I'm really feeling it. My nephew had his first time bailing, fella looks like a bit of a twig, and I could tell he was struggling with it.
