The fundamental failure of the fediverse that is limiting us is that accounts are not transportable. We need some decentralised ledger of accounts that can be cryptographically verified with a zero trust system. U just set up a oidc server to do that auth and that plugs into every single fediverse application everywhere.
I've never felt this was as important as people say, at least here in the Threadiverse I don't see it being important. Can you explain how this would help Lemmy/PieFed?
Yea I don't think it makes any sense to try to sort these items against each other. Maybe section headers would be nice too, a title for the Communities: section, etc?
I think if you do this, then the tabs for communities, users, and URL would no longer have the drop down to choose community because it's meaningless for them. They probably wouldn't have the "Top All Time" filter either. There could probably be more differences for each tab, maybe this is the way to go.
As far as I remember, the loading indicator disappears when the local search is finished and the search appears to be done, even when the remote search is continuing. This makes finding a new remote community pretty awkward.
When you do a search and it returns a mix of communities, posts, comments, users... They all sorta jumble together in weird ways. Maybe the content type of the search should not default to "All" maybe it should default to "Posts" or even just blank (forcing the user to choose).
Also the mixed results all jumble together, communities and users are tiny lines of text compared to posts and comments, maybe they need to have borders or more spacing. And maybe add more info next to communities and users.
Your concern that companies like Meta and Microsoft are too scared to let users retrain their models is also irrelevant considering both of these companies have already released models so that anyone can retrain or checkpoint merge them i.e. Llama by Meta and Phi by Microsoft.

Huggingface isn't customer-facing, it's developer-facing. Letting customers retrain your LLM sounds like a bad idea for a company like Meta or Microsoft, it's too risky and could make them look bad. Retraining an LLM for Lovecraft is a totally different scale than retraining an LLM for hundreds of millions of individual customers.

Are there any companies doing anything similar to this? From what I've seen companies avoid this stuff like the plague, their LLMs are always frozen with no custom training. Training takes a lot of compute, but also has huge risks of the LLM going off the rails and saying bad things that could even get the company into trouble or get bad publicity. Also the disk space per customer, and loading times of individual models.
The only hope for your use case is that the LLM has a large enough context window to look at previous examples from your chat and use those for each request, but that isn't the same thing as training.
If you prefer the UI of one to another now you have to create a brand new community which is going to take time to fill. I use old.lemmy.world because I like the old reddit UI

So lemmy.ca and piefed.ca have different feeds altogether when I view them, are they two separate things then?
Separate things, just the same admin I guess. You can follow the same communities from either one.
I have a Mastodon account and I haven’t sorted out any way to post on/read lemmy content with it
On Mastodon, follow the account for this community, just Mastodon uses @ instead of ! so it's @fediverse@lemmy.world and you can post to the community by mentioning it
You can paste URLs of Lemmy posts/comments into the search bar of Mastodon to pull it up. Just make sure you use the real URL and not a mirror, so you need to get the URL from Lemmy's Fediverse icon
But then who is your admin team? People don't want to deal with spam and trolls.
