  • When I was in elementary school, we came home from shopping and discovered someone had pried off the lock and stolen my bike. I was inconsolable. About an hour later I spotted a kid from my class riding my bike, and managed to recover it.

I looked that guy up a few years ago. Found him on the sex offender registry.

In high school, one of my classmates shot and killed his sister's friend while cleaning a .22 rifle. There was a trial, but I don't remember the verdict. As a minor, it might have been sealed. He disappeared for about a year. When he came back, he was completely withdrawn and...changed.

There was a guy at my high school that was just an absolute jackass. One of those guys that you know is never going to amount to anything, and will probably be in prison shortly after graduation. He disappeared my junior year, I thought he had moved.

I looked that guy up a few years ago. Actually, he had broken into someone's house (a burglary) and beat the shit out of the homeowner when he was discovered. But he'd also been held back in school a couple times, so he was 18 when he did it. When I looked him up, he had just been released from prison.

  • "Consider the lily. The birds then. Have they got jobs?"

  • Someone's been reading Asimov.

  • Can I have two? I always wanted to do two sex robots at the same time.

  • It's called The People's House for a reason.

  • I seriously hope they pass this. And then I want to see them start using it against airlines.

  • I'm not sure how common this knowledge is, but the default Lemmy web-interface sucks. There are web portals that improve it considerably. Some of them may be available direct on your instance. If not, I use https://alexandrite.app/ for my frontend.

There are others, at least one of which looks like old.reddit, but I'm not sure the address of them. I would trigger Cunningham's Law, but I don't want to add confusion.

  • Nobody is taking this seriously, except racists. Were I stationed at Fort Bragg, I would take pride in knowing the fort was named after someone with actual patriotism. But I'd be shamed in knowing the real reason for the name.

  • nicknamed SERI for “Stop CybERgroomIng.”

Maybe we should have an AI that generates proper acronyms.

  • The vast majority of people would make as much money as they could. Quickly, the economy implodes. People soon realize they can exchange their matter replicator for eggs. A new billionaire class arises, using their millions of matter replicators to make basic necessities for the worker class. The modern assembly line is now just row upon row upon row of matter replicators. One man per warehouse, just moving from matter replicator to matter replicator.

A few smarter people used their matter replicators to make more matter replicators. Lobbyists quickly pass "safety regulations", and these "black market" replicators are outlawed. Soon local police start advertising "amnesty", where you can bring in your illegal matter replicator and exchange it, no questions asked, for a gun.

A few unlucky people used their matter replicators to make drugs. The purity of replicated drugs quickly renders these people unable to continue using their replicators. These replicators are collected by next-of-kin, stolen by the people that exchanged their own replicator for eggs, or accidentally destroyed.

  • The difference with the old trim is that the new one will have a better adhesive assembly and “a stud welded to the stainless panel with a nut clamping the steel panel to the vehicle structure.”

It's a good thing Elon doesn't think "exposed screw heads are cool.". This could have been fixed with a carbide drill bit and some self-tapping screws.

  • No, I don't want my photos digitally signed and tracked, and I'm sure no whistleblower wants that either.

  • Government cheese, government butter, we even got government HONEY one time.

I'm sure my parents were embarrassed to even qualify for government aid, but I loved it and didn't think about it. I loved that little apartment, and I'm glad to see it's still there on satellite.

  • No more box springs for me. My stairs are too narrow to get them upstairs.

Instead, I put bed racks upstairs. The extra space below the bed is room for storage, or clothes drawers, or (in a pinch) pillow forts.

  • No, they cannot.

  • Right, for the Americans here that hate metric.

  • Well, Don jr. will die from congenital gonnorea, and Eric is fated to drown in a bathroom after clogging a toilet with unshredded documents.

  • A manblower isn't going to have the effect you think it will. Well, if you're smart it might.
