  • I don't think you can now. I really dislike the new three-dots menu, now it's hidden a bunch of functionality behind the "More" submenu solely to give an overly large amount of space to other options.

    btw for others, If you don't see the "Secret Settings" section, you can enable it by tapping on the Firefox logo a few times (it's in About Firefox).

  • I would like to see more finely-grained feedback than just "no". Particularly as it forces the voter to justify why they're downvoting.

    Some posts/contents are bad because they're spam, abusive, or against the rules, or in the wrong place - downvoting these is useful crowd-sourced moderation, particularly for things that don't warrant a mod report.

    Some are just indisputably wrong and it's a useful signal that the poster is talking rubbish. Then there's the grey area.

    Sometimes it's just that the poster's opinion is unpopular, and people are downvoting to suppress views they disagree with - I think that's not a good thing for a discussion and encourages echo chambers. I like the idea of one of the downvote options being "I disagree" and that basically not doing anything.

  • I believe Piefed let's you restrict downvotes to people that are subscribers. I think that's a good solution to idiots downvoting from all just because they're not interested in or understanding the post and/or the community it's in. I also wonder if people even understand that they're not training an algorithm, just dragging people's posts down.

  • No, I never got to a happy place with this feature. I was trying to parse the wikitext (the markup language used for MediaWiki) but it's a hairy beast so I thought about parsing the output html instead. Then the site started being really unreliable and I put the transcriptions on the back burner.

    I learnt with the one on the main site, "the Rust book" which is good for explaining concepts and is (or certainly was) considered the standard textbook.

    Rust by Example is good for a quick start in how to do various things, but imho is most valuable for experienced programmers and as a cheatsheet-style reference.

    Once you start writing your own code, it's useful to look at Blessed.rs to show what are the fairly standard options for basic libraries for logging, http, etc that you might have expected to be in the standard library. It's useful to be pointed at something that's good enough instead of spending hours investigating the various competing crates.

  • My email uses greylisting which is where the first email received from a server gets a "busy" response - the idea being that spammers just fire and forget whereas real mailers will retry.

    Unfortunately, some senders take so long to resend that it's timed out. The second time will work though. Unless they have multiple servers. Some have so many servers that you have to do this a multitude of times until you lose the will to login or forget what you were going to do anyway.

    The fix is not obvious: you need to escape the . with a backslash (\.):

  • I'm still deciding how much I agree or disagree with this. It's true that they do cite books which you often can't read online, but adding information backed up by a paywalled proof feels a bit "trust me bro". E.g. I could find/create a site with an impossibly large paywall and no-one would realistically able to check my sources.

  • Disgraceful, old-fashioned actions from the unnamed diving certifiers insurer - and, as the major diving insurance company (based in Malta) is DAN World Insurance Group SP, it's clear that DAN puts their reputation above child safety.

    I would add that I'm not sure 30 days is "generous" given that 90 days is somewhat standard, but given that it took only two days for a lawyer's threats to arrive that's not too relevant.
