  • Niri does have named workspaces so you can absolutely switch to fixed workspaces like you describe.

    I have fixed workspaces but then temporarily add extra workspaces for side tasks - these are relative to the named ones but don't stop you jumping to your named workspaces (assuming you've got your shortcut keys set up to match).

    Diurnal tides are once a day (semidiurnal is twice a day). By the Gulf Coast, I guess you must mean the Gulf of Mexico. I'm living on the other side of the world in the other diurnal region, so I assume our tides are synchronised!

  • I think that the little extra work to have separate services is a small price to pay to have the kind of top notch user experience that you can only get with a dedicated tool.

    Besides, it's cool to have a load of different services. Most self-hosters seem to be constantly on the lookout for the next thing to install.

  • I think we'll see a bump in users centred around October, since that is when MS had announced support for Windows 10 ended. They have recently announced that you can (maybe) get into the Extended Security Updates program for a year for free, but that's perhaps too little too late.

  • My hardware's new enough that my WiFi card doesn't work on Windows 10 (and won't, only Win11), but it works on recent-ish Linux kernels. Not contradicting you, but it was interesting to see.

  • Huh, when you put it that way it sounds like a lot - three films a year for a decade and a half, plus the Mandalorian, etc.

    As with almost everything, I reckon the truth is in the middle - that there's a tribal backlash by those that consider "woke" a slur, and it's being amplified by those who are genuinely overexposed to him.

    I did quickly fact-check myself after posting and my brief reading suggested that it was possible to break the port, motherboard, or the peripheral, but that it was rare and more likely to cause corruption and/or crashes.

  • Given that it was identified that genAI couldn't do maths and should instead write a small python program, why hasn't this other well-known failing been special cased? AI sees text as tokens, but surely it can convert tokens to a stream of single-character tokens (i.e. letters) and work with that?

  • This is very satisfying to use and is a nice companion to the command line - I particularly use it to stage only certain lines and files from the changes.

    I tried lazygit first, but there was a consistent lag that was probably only ¼ second but it ruined the experience for me.
